Moot point.
I don't think it is. The words are very clearly written to shut off at first click. Ford holds the keys to my warranty, not random internet dude saying Ford is wrong. It's very clear that they state not to top off.

Whether or not is is detrimental to the carbon canister or evap system Ford still has to approve warranty.

I just wanted the members of MTC to know that what you are proposing is not what Ford says is the correct thing to do.

It is ok because 2-3 clicks is necessary to rule out premature shutoffs. The first click tells you nothing. Sometimes it happens after 1 gallon has flowed into the empty tank.
If it's clicking off for you after just 1 gallon you're doing something horribly wrong.

On the diagram eight and nine are the potential problems not five. Five is not a problem on any vehicle I have seen.

Ford in the instruction manual says not to go past one click. I will go with what Ford says on this.

Why topping off is OK as long as you don't spill and pollute.

(And why your car care nut and Uncle Joey have unfounded worries about the "carbon filter canister".)

This thread is not meant to be a debate and I'm not telling anyone what they should or should not do.

This is information. Information that shows the risks of the past likely no longer exist today.

That said, in the hybrid with capless filler tube, I find it fills fully, reliably, repeatedly with just three clicks. No need to go beyond that.

Here is the fuel system diagram from Ford.

IMG_1360.jpeg

1: fuel fill tube
2: fuel module
3: fuel level sensor
4: fuel tank
5: fuel vapor return line
(5 is what people worry about needlessly)
6: fuel pressure sensor
7: refueling vent valve that opens when you push the refuel open door button
8: fuel tank pressure control during operation
9: carbon canister
10: vent valve
11: vent to atmosphere
12: vent to engine
13: recirculation valve
14: engine intake manifold

The particular technique different individuals use to refuel their trucks should have no effect on the much worried about "carbon canister".

Hope that helps some of you sleep peacefully. How that canister got ruined in a 1998 vehicle bears no resemblance to the hybrid Maverick of today

Well, according to Mavericks manual you are wrong, it specifically says NOT to do this

The point I made is:

Each brand/make/model of car is different. Advice for one, does not apply to all.
Well, according to Mavericks manual you are wrong, it specifically says NOT to do this

The hybrids basically don't allow any real "topping off" anyway. It's engineered out.
Well, according to Mavericks manual you are wrong, it specifically says NOT to do this, so "it's NOT engineered out".

And the highway says not to go over the speed limit. Bet you've done it more than once.

I posted the schematic. Have a look from your glass house.

Wait... it's Papa Smurf. Have a look from your mushroom.

Don't need the schematic, and I live in a Brick house. The manual is very clear on the subject. I trust the ford engineers more than some self imposed expert at a dumb car talk website

Most people think filling to the top sends fuel directly down number 5 and since 5 is a "vent"' it must somehow be connected to the other vents going to/from the carbon canister.

Well, I can neither confirm nor deny that was the root cause of canister failures in OLDER MODELS.

But you can clearly see, 5 is not connected to the carbon canister in the hybrid Maverick.

You're welcome for the clarification.

I'm wondering if those in the "600 Club" top it off, the put more gas in after the pump stops?
For me, when the pump stops, I stop. No need to overfill it. There's a ton of gas stations here in town.

Well well, based on your comment, your some young punk. Really shows your maturity level.

Also, here's a few more sources of reliable information, in addition to what the Ford Engineers advise in the owners manual opposing the bad information your posting.

I only top off for fun to see if i can hit the even dollar amount. If I go over I either accept failure or double down for the next dollar (gas price commensurate with risk!)
Well here in NJ where an attendant pumps gas and you pay in cash. Most attendants will top off to the nearest dollar. At the cost it is usually not much. I have never had an issue with any car I've owned. Now if I was paying by cc they would not top off

1998 I would generally pay for gas with cash. Topping off was to get to a round/full dollar. It may have involved nearly a full gallon. Now I pay with a card always, so it doesn't matter but to get to a full dollar would rarely be even an quart of gas.

I trust the engineers more than I do whoever writes the Ford user manuals. Sometimes instructions and warnings are very vague and may list things that don't apply to all models of vehicles. But It doesn't always tell you that.
