Same issue with the ford van I use at work. Try ignoring the stripes when you get close. Then use the curb or edge of pavement and try to get the bumper parallel. I find this works.

1998 I would generally pay for gas with cash. Topping off was to get to a round/full dollar. It may have involved nearly a full gallon. Now I pay with a card always, so it doesn't matter but to get to a full dollar would rarely be even an quart of gas.
