Just installed the Rough Country tailgate shock.

My first was a smart rearview mirror with HomeLink, my second was the tailgate shock. Both should be standard, but Ford is trying to hold down the list price, which is kinda why they make them at all...

Doesn't seem to hold true heading into MY 2025.
Members have bought auto dimming mirrors for < $35 and these tailgate assists typically are under $40.
They should at least be an option on lower trims and auto dimming mirrors should be standard on Lariat and Tremor.

Just because you want doesn't mean it should be stock. I won't put one on because I prefer the tie down when carrying sheet goods.
There's plenty of cheap easy cures for that straight from amazon, hardware store, etc that retain a tailgate tie down so owners can have both. Lots of post on this forum as examples. I have them both on mine. But I agree it doesn't mean they have to be stock

This is a subject I have wondered about for the last couple of years: why does the tailgate need a shock? It seems obvious to me that if you owned the previous generation of Ranger, with a tailgate 2/3 as tall, and double the weight, the Maverick would be a breeze. I admit I do not understand the need to sacrifice a useful feature just to be able to open and then drop the tailgate when you are standing right there anyway. Truly a puzzle to me.

This takes care of tie downs.

convenience if you hands are pretty full or little ones around or just don't like it slamming down if your not holding it . otherwise personal satisfaction

I think this post covered it pretty well. It is not about the weight of the tailgate it's about the acceleration.

Less than 4 seconds to drop.

The Maverick tailgate is lightweight and easy to open/close, I don't have a need for this.
I put it on my 22 Maverick. I'm not installing it on my 2025. The tailgate isn't heavy and the damper lowers too slowly. I know I could remove it on my 22, but I just haven't gotten around to it and it soon won't be mine any longer anyway.

Has anyone experienced any damage from dropping their unassisted tailgate? Or is the shock just used to prevent the noise from dropping it?

Weight and damage are not a concern at all, it takes no effort at all to use it, but noise is my reason. I hated the sound it made if I accidentally dropped it, or if my hands were full of stuff. I owned my Maverick for about three months before getting it, no regrets at all.

I know these are a point of contention for some, but I LOVE mine. If it was factory, some would have to remove them, so it gives us something else to mod to our satisfaction. Best thing ever as far as I'm concerned.
And they are cheap.
