Second rear boom the spare tie popping? Would that help flip the truck????
Spare tire popping wouldn't produce over a 100# of upward force. The fact that Vehicle #1 hit the brakes before hitting the Maverick, which caused it to nose dive and pushed under the rear of the Maverick (vehicle #2) is what caused it to flip.

Holy F**k is right. Hope they survived... Wonder what's the story on the F-150 driver?

Going to go out on a limb here and say that Maverick was totaled out.
Brave.

I'd like to say I'm surprised to see such a horrendous crash, but people are too pre-occupied and some, just plainly stupid and irresponsible to be allowed on the public roadways.
Sure, I say this, but after having been rear-ended, almost run into too many times to count, and recently watch two separate rear-end collisions at the same light only a couple cars apart, I think my assessment is quite accurate.
Heck, when I bought my last Ranger, I didn't even make home from the dealership, about five miles away, almost had some woman on her cell phone almost run right into the side of me. I'm sure the one rear hit I took probably contributed to the spinal surgery I had, too.

People don't seem to take seriously the fact they're piloting one or two tons of steel down the road with the potential to kill people or severely ruin their lives.

This same scenario happened years ago to my boss's wife. It totaled her BMW and broke her back but she did make a pretty good recovery over 9 months.

This often happens when they put a stop light on a long stretch of 4 lane roads where 2 lanes are going in different directions. As the light turns green, everyone gets off the brake and starts accelerating slowly as the get back up to speed. Like stopped and then going up to 65mph.

Problem is a truck/car looking up ahead 4-500 feet only sees vehicles with no brake lights on and misjudges how quickly his high speed will catch up to the 10-20mph speed of those just getting off the brakes and moving forward slowly.

Fast vehicle slams into the back of the slow vehicle. Yes the fast vehicle driver is at fault.

I have an awareness of this when I travel to a nearby town. If I am the last car (nobody close behind me) I reach over and put on my flashers. I do stay back a little from the car in front just to play it safer. Once I get up to speed or if I don't see someone coming up from behind and I am over 50 or so, I turn them off.

of course in this example it probably wasn't a traffic light that slowed the traffic but the cause is still the same. Driver not judging slow or stopped traffic.

There is a huge amount of stored energy in a spare tire, a blowout can have the same force as a hand grenade. No one should ever forget that tires are a pressure vessel and contain ridiculous amounts of potentially violent energy.
I don't doubt that the spare tire bursting added some drama to an already horrible collision.

It's why I've taught my kids to keep an eye on the rear view mirror, not phones at lights.
Also, why I don't ride anymore, to many morons out there now.

Some wisdom:

Speed disparity on highways is something to always be cautious of. Anytime one lane gets stopped while the others are moving is a recipe for disaster. If you can avoid it or find a way out of it do that.

Also - if it surprises you it will surprise others.

Situations like that I always try to get out of or partially point my car into the emergency lane. This way I have a way out. Also vehicles further back will be more likely to notice the nose of a car move into the emergency lane.

Most likely texting or watching videos. I see it everyday on my 78 mile round trip commute.

Looking at how the blue car was close behind the big pickup, looks to me like they were running fast. Bet the big pickup driver was watching the guy behind him in his mirror.

I'd like to know if a violent rear impact like this will deploy the airbags. It seems logical that such immediate blunt force would/should pop those windbags., no matter where on the truck impact takes place.
