I thought this video helps to explain what you gain with the optional gear ratio. So I thought it worthy of posting.

No I believe low or 1st gear. As you increase speed the torque converter is close to one to one, compared to 2.5 times.. The 235 ft lbs of torque I believe is across the board but is not as noticeable in higher gears. Basically consider it pulling power to get into motion. Once anything is rolling it takes less inertia to keep it going. Of course this does not take in hills or more importantly drive line shock.But the calculation assumes two things. First you must be at 3,000 RPM and second, you must be in eighth gear. What does this translate into velocity?

Actually 3000rpm to hit max torque is low in comparison to many other engines. I think this is helpful when needing max torque in low gear for pulling or off road.
