Greetings all!

I recently got my 2024 Ford Maverick XL Hybrid and have been doing a deep dive on the factory window tint that comes with the truck. While there are plenty of posts on different window tint percentages % as they relate to Visible Light Transmission (VLT) as a means to add privacy, there seems to be a lack of consistency on whether or not the default factory windows offer any Ultra Violet Light (UVL) and Infrared Light (IRR) protection.

Most posts I see have people saying that there is no UVL or IRR protection in the default factory windows, just VLT, however I've yet to see a post that provides any credible sources.

This post however, has a great source from Ford of Australia which clearly states default privacy glass from ford blocks 98% UV light which would also imply it provides some level of IRR protection as well: https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/what-tint-comes-on-mavericks-from-factory.25855/

Moving On:
The next question is with "98% ultraviolet (UV) light" protection how much Infrared Light protection is offered? Speaking with a local window tint specialist he said that if the window has UV light protection it also should offer some % of IRR protection. How much IRR protection is the question.

I've seen other posts on this forum mention this device:

Have any of you had a chance to see if your local window tint shop can test these three variables on the default glass? I'd be interested to know along with many others!

Summary:
It seems the vast majority of Maverick owners are purchasing window tint on the back two side windows and back window for the purpose of getting the heat reduction during hot summer months. Has anyone tested the UV and IRR default protection? I feel like a lot of us are potentially spending money for a feature that might already be built into the default factory glass. If anyone has credible information on the subject I'd appreciate your input!

I got just my front two windows tinted with 20% ceramic to match the rears. My tint shop did use that exact tool but I was only paying attention to the first number. It read 24.5% on the factory tinted rear windows. I think this is close but 22% is probably more accurate. Check the picture below, maybe ford lists more info about these windows specs if you google the part numbers.

You do not have to get "blackout" film to get good UV / IR(heat) rejection.

I am in California and decided to get tint quotes. I agree with @Jah. - it seems high.

Here is what I am seeing on average for sides and rear (windshield in parentheses):
  • 3M Obsidian Film or Llumar ATC $250 30-39% IR Heat Rejection & 99.9% UV Rejection
  • Suntek Ceramic Film or Llumar CTX $380 68-79% IR Heat Rejection & 99.9% UV Rejection Lifetime Warranty
  • 3M Ceramic Film or Llumar AIR 80 or IRX $500 ($280) 90% IR Heat Rejection & 99.9% UV Rejection Lifetime Warranty
  • 3M Crystalline Film $900 ($420) 99% IR Heat Rejection & 99.9% UV Rejection Lifetime Warranty

If I'm thinking about this right, you could basically do an IR30 on the front and IR5 on the rears and get roughly matching tint. Nevermind got that backwards

Chances are you don't need the back side windows or back window tinted to get UV / IR protection. The only reason to spend the extra money is if you wanted to increase the window tint and reduce VLT (Visible Light Transmission) in order to increase privacy.

Here in NJ all tint on windshields or front seat side windows is illegal. I do see many cars with it though. But I don't want an excuse to be pulled over.

Same in pa. I did the back and side windows and got it done by a guy locally, for $250. He did a good job.

Did you post on Reddit?

For any wondering, all vehicle windshields offer 99% UV protection. It’s a feature of the laminate used to make them pliable in an accident. This includes the Maverick.

Maverick windows (including the front and rear factory tinted ones) offer around 85% UV protection.

How do I know the above? I used a UV meter that measures both A and B light and tested my Maverick.

All offer little heat rejection. The factory tint offers little utility other than looks. No increase in UV blockage what so ever.
