What's up with the Extended Warranty?

I had the Ford ESP on my 2011 F250, diesel, twice . Towed a 5th wheel trailer. Used it twice…1st on on radio failure and exhaust cooler thingie. Few years later, got another, this time marked as used vehicle. Never had to use it. Had this diesel truck 12 yrs, 96k miles. Sold camper, traded F250 on this Maverick . The Maverick almost 7 months old, with approx 1,6xx miles so far. Debating if want an extended warranty. Dealer offers a lifetime power train warranty for buying thru him. But it’s the other stuff that worries me - BCM & PCM, injectors, CV shafts, displays.

Have time to consider. Probably time the factor, not mileage cause nit driven enough. My F250 ran out of time on duration part of warranty.

This is the first time I bought an extended warranty on a new vehicle. I am not sure it’s because this is my first hybrid, reading this forum too much or because I am so close to retirement and I had the cash now (probably a little of all 3). I also bought 8 years of replacement cost as a piece of mind in case someone decides I need a new truck for me!

Mine comes with lifetime warranty for engine and transmission with free oil changes from Apple Ford in Columbia MD. A bargain hard to find at no cost. Oil changes every 7 k miles!!

Be careful with those dealer lifetime warranties. They usually come with a catch to them.

First off I am a former Toyota and Honda car salesman (about 10 years ago) and even then would have said don't get the warranty. After that though when I bought my used Subaru I got the extended warranty and went through 2 short blocks, 2 radiators, and 2 a/c compressors. It definitely paid for itself.

Now fast forward to February when I got my Maverick, I decided to get one through Grainger during one of their best sales and put my fordpass points towards it. I chose the 125k/7yr because it was the best value to me where my realistic mileage over the 5yr finance term would meet term length. I might be anywhere between 5 years and 6.5 years for 125k but didn't want to pay nearly double to jump to a 10 year with higher mileage because my theory is by then I should have an idea how long it will last and the wear and tear parts I would have to pay out of pocket after then. So when I'm done financing I hope to at least year a few months of no car payments where I'm still just under warranty and can decide to keep the truck longer term and pay the maintenance costs then, or get out of it and purchase a new vehicle.

I'm a self proclaimed Ford guy, but I also don't have much faith in ANY new vehicle so I hopefully have 5 years of not worrying about things outside of oil, brakes, and tires. As far as most chassis and suspension work, I can do it all myself. Even some basic external engine work like plugs, pumps, belts etc... I can but my expertise stops short of being able to or wanting to pull an engine/transmission and rebuild it. If the major things seem ok after then, I can deal with spending a bit of money each year to keep it going.

The last real callout though I can think of while writing this is rust. I plan on spraying it down in the fall each year with surface shield, but if it looks to be rotted away in 5 years I'll dump it no matter what. With the premiumcare most of the major parts in the suspension and subframe are covered until then, but after I don't want to rebuild and entire front or rear end. I guess this is more a ramble of random thoughts but figured I'd type it out anyway lol

How much did you pay for that warranty? Do they run sales on them?

Ive never in the past purchased an extended warranty. However with the Maverick i think I might. Most important is I plan to keep this car forever. Cars now are more computerized and require special parts or module's that cost a fortune. In addition, the simplest of mechanical parts could cost in excess of $1,000 including labor to repair.
Parts wear out with normal use. I also would avoid non Motorcraft parts for many items. Junk aftermarket parts just make your problems worse for many sensitive components.

One more item is that this technology of the hybrid and or the Eco-boost engs seem to not be free of issues that would require attention. In most states (not mine) the extended warranty is very reasonable priced through Grainger

How much did you pay for that warranty? Do they run sales on them?

keep an eye on here for posts by Granger, or email them direct. I believe they still give an extra discount for forum members. They only charge like $50 above cost of something so you can go online and put in your vehicle info and compare prices. I won't say exactly what I paid because it varies based on model, mileage, year etc... but it was less than $2000 for 125/7yr premiumcare with a $100 deductible. I also added the led/lights package which I recomend so it covers the headlight assemblies. The normal premiumcare won't cover those and it's like an automatic $1000 or more to replace.

Yea, aware, I read the BS they write in them. Maintenance is the big ticket of most. And who services them. I am a big believer in PM of all my vehicles. Don’t expect any hic cups with this truck, or with dealer, should any issue crops up.

I've owned MANY cars in my life. BMWs, Hondas, Jags, Fords, Toyotas, Lexus.... the list goes on. It's a bit embarrassing to think about really. But I've been a new car addict forever. Anyway, Why are Mav owners paying for an extended warranty? I've never paid for one and never needed it. Are you guys nervous because it's a hybrid or is it a truck thing? Thank you for your input. This forum always provides helpful insights .

I have one on my Mav and one on my wife's Escape. As a retired Risk Manager I can tell you that there are 3 choices: accept the risk (don't buy extended warranty), avoid the risk (don't buy the vehicle) or transfer the risk (buy the warranty). My decision to purchase the warranty game down to how long we keep our cars and the fact that the electronics are so expensive these days. I traded an Audi Q5 in on the Maverick, which had 64K and had more than 3X the cost of a warranty at time of trade-in (yes, I know Audis are expensive to maintain). But in addition to avoiding high repair costs, I also believe that when I sell or trade in at 60-70K miles the cars will be easier to dispose of if it's still under warranty.

For me, it's a new model thing.

I bought a 2023 Maverick. That means they had a chance to go fix the obvious issues that were causing recalls the first year, but it's still a version 1.1 (better than 1.0) of a new thing. There could be systemic issues they won't discover for another couple years. Who knows how easy or hard it will be to get parts?

That, and I want my Maverick to last me 10 years. It's the first new vehicle I've ever purchased and I got exactly the features I wanted in it, so I want it to last. I remember my parents in the 80s buying a new car for the first time, one which could have benefited from an extended warranty or a lemon law, and so I'm wary.

It has nothing to do with reliability any more; extended warranties are a hedge against inflation. I bought a 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited in 2021, paid about $2,200 for a near bumper-to-bumper extended warranty. Within 6 months it needed a new steering rack and several electronic components in the A/C system; nothing to do with compressor, condenser, evaporator etc..., just the electronic controls. Total bill for both: over $7,200.00!!!! If you're going to keep a vehicle for any time longer than 3 years (nearly every manufacturer today has a 3-year/ 36,000-mile warranty), I think you're rather foolish to not get the extended warranty.
