I think Ford should come out with a maverick with a traditional 2.5 L four-cylinder and a non-CVT transmission. My old fusion had a very reliable engine transmission combination that could help cut costs Lower the prices of a base vehicle. The 2.5 L engine, made over 175 hp and is very close to the horsepower with the 1.5 L turbo. Ford escape use that 2.5 L and offered all-wheel-drive if they could make the 8-speed automatic it could get decent gas mileage. I believe it would also make the vehicle more reliable. If you’re just using it to make deliveries, driving around town or on the highway. I am not worried about 0 to 60 times. Just need basic reliable and inexpensive vehicle. If they could keep this vehicle starting at under $23,000 They would probably sell as well as the original Ford Mustang.

The 2.5 hybrid is already very reliable as it is. I just don't see the point, additional engineering, design, and manufacturing work that requires millions of dollars just to be left with a worse product that sells with lower profit margins than the current hybrid.

Nope.

The Hybrid has an eCVT (not a CVT) and I'm on my way to a 650 mile tank (maybe better).

What Ford should do (if anything) is make a PHEV or full EV Maverick.

Ford would own the "small truck" segment (and be a player in others).

Toyota formula, detuned low performance NA ICE that lasts forever. They never quite got the MPG part down pat without hybrid though.

Someone in another thread suggested Ford use the 1.5 L turbo to cut costs for a base model Maverick. I started a thread to come up with other ideas to lower the cost for people who are just looking for basic transportation, removing the battery pack and using a non-ECVT transmission could help with acceleration on a non-hybrid non-turbo engine. If they go away from the Atkin cycle engine for the non-hybrid making more hp. This would not add a a lot of development costs, yes millions. But could save thousands per vehicle for fleet sales/base vehicle as well as offer a sticker price with delivery under $23k. Gas mileage could stay in the 26mpg city 35mpg highway. Ford already uses the eight speed automatic for the awd with the 2.0 turbo. Offering more options for all buyers. Look at the issues with the 3 cylinder 1.5 L turbo engine.

I don't know. My son has an old Fusion with that engine and it is a dog. No torque, no fun.

The electric motors in hybrids can help both NA and turbo engines because they fill in the lapses in torque while the gasping I-4 gets into its powerband or the turbo spools up.

Just my opinion, but I think they nailed the target market with what they offer, and probably even did the right thing by making the hybrid the "upgrade" for those who showed up just for that.

What Ford really ought to do is get their hybrid software (especially related to battery management) under control while they still have a happy customer base.

I had a 2023 Toyota RAV4 awd on vacation last summer averaged 37 mpg non hybrid. Trip from Nashville to Vicksburg was 41.5 mpg. Was very happy with the miles per gallon I got with a non-hybrid.

Already have the base xl @ $23,815 so makes zero sense.

I had an Excape 2.3 5-speed manual that is still running strong (original clutch) at ~300,000 miles per the new owner.

The 2.5 with a 6-speed manual would be great!

Would have to be a lot cheaper to offset the inferior mpg
