How did this go? Any tips? Does dealer need to know before I walk in? There are much better rates than dealers are offering.

I financed through Navy Federal Credit Union, because they had the cheapest rates I could find.
Applied online, received a check by overnight delivery, took it to the dealership with me.
No, dealership does not need to know in advance, though I did tell my dealer in a conversation beforehand.
They readily agreed they couldn't come close to NFCU's rates.

Just like nobbyv said. I went to Navy Federal which had much better rates than the dealership. They did approval over the phone and I just had to go pick up a check from them the next day at my closest branch. The day after that I drove to the dealership and handed them the check in exchange for my Mav. Done.

:teehee::crackup:

Not sure how your autocorrect changed MM Mav to nobbyv, but it sure made me laugh.
That's hilarious! I just saw that yours posted before mine. It wasn't there when I started posting. Great minds I guess...

I assume there is not a local branch? Reason for mail. There is not a local branch by me either or Pen Fed which has great rates.

@Area51BS I don't have a local branch near me, but NFCU has brick and mortar locations.

Since I am unable to join NFCU (i.e., not a veteran of the Navy, have no immediate family in the Navy), I researched PenFed, Chase, and a few others. Dealer beat the PenFed rate. I informed him ahead of time I was shopping around.

I joined Navy Fed and was approved for the loan. Showed to my local CU and they matched it (4.625 for 60 months 9/23).. Dealer couldn't touch the rate and gave me no trouble with outside financing,

I financed through the dealer and within 30 days refinanced through my credit union. They had a better promotion for refinancing existing loans than a new auto loan oddly enough. Went from 6.75% to 3.25%.

Tell the dealer only after you have worked the numbers and are sitting with f&I in my opinion. This is coming from a former salesman, unless you're somehow personally close with your dealer. And if you plan to refinance within 60-90 days and leave with dealership financing for the time being DONT say anything. They'll beg and plead with you so they don't get a charge back. Unless the dealership is physically paying your bills you don't owe them anything nor them you. "It's just business" and they'd just as happily turn around and screw you over too. As a matter of fact that's their plan when you come back in for service ;)

ANY military service qualifies for Navy Fed.

Ask the dealer and they can let you know ahead of time if they’ve worked with that lender before which makes it so fast and easy. I put my down payment directly to the dealer on a credit card (to get points) they let you charge up to $5000 at my dealership- drove away with my truck and let my bank handle the rest. I’ve gone to other dealers that do not let you do this- but that might be unusual because every dealer I’ve told that to scoffs. Anyways- when that happened I just refinanced at my own bank once my plates came in.
