I took delivery of my ordered 2024 Maverick on March 12. On the invoice was a line item of $540 for "Closing Fee".
I questioned this charge and was told this $540 charge was something mandated by South Carolina.
It was explained they had no choice at the dealership even though there is only supposed to be a $150 maximum "Doc Fee".

Has anyone else, that purchased a new vehicle in South Carolina, under X-Plan, received the same fee and explanation ?

Thank you for your posts.

Ford can only limit the document fee under X plan. Other fees that the state considers reasonable can be added, it appears.
I believe that is the same as a documentary fee or doc fee, it's a charge to cover cost with the state for title, registration, plate fee or transfer. So instead of a dealership eating up profits for administration cost it's added to cover office cost to handle these transactions. Of course that's what I was told back in the 80's. I would contact Ford headquarters about this, it appears they are double charging for the same purpose only calling it a different name.

Thank you.. Hopefully someone who purchased in South Carolina can respond as well with their specifics.

Don't thank me yet. It depends on how Ford program headquarters think of this. I just think it definitely should be brought to their attention.

When you look at what the state includes in the allowable contents of a closing fee, there's a bunch of administrative costs that the dealer would probably claim go beyond the documents related to the purchase paperwork.

Not saying I agree with the tactic but I doubt Ford would choose to fight that battle when the state calls them out as reasonable and has not challenged the fee amount (which they say is reviewed for reasonableness).

If the dealership is charging a documentary fee twice I don't think it's not much of a fight. Plan allows a certain amount of doc fee after that Ford can decide not to allow dealership to sell a, z, or x-plan. All of these Ford pays the dealership profit or a percentage of the price for profit. On the X the customer has a small portion to pay. If the dealership is not abiding by the rules Ford has designed for plan purchase it's not much of a fight. It's more like a violation of the rules. Then again I don't know how Ford program headquarters would look at it. They are all ready paying the dealership to make a profit. I guess it boils down if the dealership is following the guidelines set by Ford or overcharging, and that I don't want to assume either way. I do think it needs to be brought to their attention.

Closed in Greenwood, SC Nov '23. Paid $225 closing fee plus a $99.50 title and tag fee (I transferred plates from my Ranger).
Edit: No X-Plan.

X-Plan caps the doc fee at a flat $100, no matter the state. In Pennsylvania, dealers charge the state maximum of $449, but with my deal, I saved $299 overall, as X-Plan only costed me a $50 one year membership to Mustang Club of America. Worth the $50. 👍

When I was looking to buy a ranger before the maverick was announced. I got the first price print out from the salesman and then I remembered I had xplan through work. They take the original printout added in the xplan discounts but shuffeled other numbers and fees around and it came to maybe 100 less overall when it should have saved me over $300. But there was a 200 detailing fee that wasnt on the original. But they shred the original and then gaslight you when you call them out.

Against my better judgment I went to the same dealer to look into ordering a 22 maverick. Similar bullshit and a $1k non-refundable deposit. So I left and ended up ordering and buying 2 from Chapman Ford 5 hours away.
