Found Quote: (illegal in a number of states, including MA, VA and PA unless you can show that you are on the way to get a trailer, or have just dropped one off. Balls in bumper hitches tend to block the license plate, and the cops can't read them. For some reason, there's no exception for receiver hitches, even when they don't obscure the plate. Never have seen enforcement, may not be a primary stop reason.)

luckily, no damage to my Mav. I'm so glad I bought the hitch step to protect the bumper, and it did exactly that. I used to have it installed all the way in for a low profile look but I thought, it might work better if it sticks out farther. There are a few holes for the locking pin and I used the very first one. I'm also glad I got the plastic one. Had it been metal, it might have done damage to the Mav. His plate is pushed in a bit. Other than that, we're both fine. He said he'd pay me for a replacement. We exchanged info, shook hands and parted ways. Then it dawned on me, I didn't get his f'ing number!

should have called the cops anyways - that way you get his license number his phone number and he gets a ticket for distracted driving - he could have just as easily ran into some pedestrian him using his phone while driving. Also there's sometimes mechanical internal probs after an accident, something might have gotten shifted over and is now out of whack. Good thing you're safe and not much physical damage but sometimes these end up being bigger deals down the road....

Does the hitch bump step block visibility of the license plate at all? I wouldn't want to get pulled over for plate obstruction just because I was trying to save my bumper from all the terrible drivers.

When my Ram 3500 was rear ended at a stop light and the landscape driver's truck was uninsured, I wish I'd had a hitch in. As it was he was able to drive off afterwards even with leaking transmission fluid. I had about $6300 repairs.
With the Maverick I'll stick to a bump type step.

Nice work...message me your address, I'll mail you $10 cash to help pay for the new step.
It's a great idea I had not thought of and you probably saved all of us $10 per year on our insurance.
Good work American!

I purchased this step based up the OP's recommendation, and I was beyond disappointed when it arrived. It's very cheap plastic, and that it protected anything is a total surprise. If you want to buy one of these steps, make sure it's made of steel with a heavy rubber coating.

It does depending on when you're at when you're looking at it.

Sorry you're disappointed. I shared it knowing there will be questions what I used.
You should return it and get something more to your liking.

Certainly not your fault. I'm a frequent user of Amazon, and in the last few months much of what I purchased turned out to be cheaply made. I'd caution anyone buying online to find as many unbiased reviews as possible.

Funny how I’ve been watching this thread and wanting to order a hitch step to protect my maverick which is only a few days old. I don’t care if it blocks the plate…….
So in my Amazon cart is an all steel step. Nothing too crazy just something to absorb a light hit.
Was about to pull the trigger to day and order when I get to work and of course what happens…..?
Some jackass rear ends me when traffic abruptly slows up. I mean the mavericks brakes are great. From about 45-50mph to a had stop and No skid or slide and I stopped with about 2-3 feet in front of me. The guy behind me was pretty much riding my ass and went right into the hitch mount and bumper. He was driving a ‘23 BMW X3 he got a couple of months ago. His bumper will need to be replaced as it has cracks and bends.
The maverick took the hit well, no visual damage on the bumper or anywhere on the hitch but then again it was pitch black on the highway. I did notice some light dings on the tailgate under the word maverick which I can probably get out myself(Amature PDR).
Long story short, get the hitch step. A fix it ticket is cheaper than a body shop bill. I was fortunate enough to get away with nothing but some small dings. Had it been at a faster pace I don’t know. I’ll take some pics later on my lunch break.

Too bad the hitch steps are ugly, take away from the appearance and people bang their shins off them. Never getting one! This Maverick is my 3rd small ford truck and have not been hit from behind yet.

I ordered one to try out. About $30 on Amazon for maverick we just got. Too many distracted drivers in Austin area.

You don't want steel. The whole idea is that the plastic crushes and it sacrifices itself to absorb some of the impact instead of crushing in the frame rail and giving you a writeoff.
