Apparently they will automatically retract and scrape along the upper edge of the hood .

Unrelated, who makes good touch-up paint?
Ford dealer has touch up paint.. wherever you purchase it the door jamb sticker has a box labeled EP (Exterior Paint).

Was the vehicle remote started, or did you get in and turn the key without putting the wipers down?

Turned the key. Remote start does not do this.

I'd almost call it an unintended feature.

I wouldn't leave my wipers up in winter weather regardless. I've seen a number of windshields cracked because the wiper arm got bumped down or the wind blew it.

This is not a Mav-specific problem. I don't believe that there are any vehicles with hidden wipers from any manufacturer that handle this well. There are also lots of vehicles that do not have a latching wiper to even allow you to do this. Just stop putting your wipers up and use your heated wiper setting like it was designed.

Thanks for the insight. I do not have the heated wiper option. Remote start with defroster only does so much when the gales of November come slashing, and I'm not waiting for breakfast.

Good advice.
I don't leave the wipers up in winter. Wears out the springs holding wiper against the windshield. De-icer and scraper do the job just fine.

My suggestion is a thin piece of PPF along the back hood edge for those who like to leave the wipers up to prevent them freezing to the windshield, and might forget to lower them before starting or remote starting. - I see those remote starting more likely to forget they're up and remember after they scraped the hood.

As an alternative, which would be more noticeable, you could use clear door edge guard along the back edge as well.

Agreed I have done that when changing wipers on a car. Now I put a rag down whenI do it.

Hear ya on the wiper change. Been a good 25 years since I did it, but you only have to do it once before you take steps to avoid your mistake again!
