Blackstone Oil Analysis Report(s) | Hybrid

Back in October I completed my second oil change on my Hybrid at 10,888 miles. This was the first oil change that I did myself - the first one was done at a local dealer at 4,267 miles.

For context: I drive with fuel economy in mind generally, but also regularly see WOT. I use remote start every day (under ~40*) and see lots of idle time in the cold weather. Put simply, I use every bit of what the truck has to offer without being intentionally abusive.

The oil tested is Motorcraft (Oil & Filter) Full Synthetic 0W-20 and the oil life monitor was at 50%. Obviously it was changed early, but reassuring that this engine will be totally happy with 10k mile intervals. I will change again at 20k, 30k, 40k... etc.

Edit: May 2024 update - this was the plan, but winter changed my usage much more than I was expecting. I ended up changing again at 16,801 at 23% OLM. At the request of another member I have edited the title of this thread so that it can be a repository for Blackstone oil reports specific to hybrids so that we can compare them over time.

I doubt that I will do any more oil analyses - but this was fun and I learned a lot. Take from it what you will...

A long time ago, in a different space/time continuum I had a 1979 Datsun 510 wagon that still ran perfectly after my two kids and a big, fat Labrador Retriever completely destroyed the interior. Something like 200K miles, oil changes at 5K increments, but I can't be held totally responsible for my failing memory.

My question to the OP is: How long do you really expect your new Mav to last? I'm thinking the engine is the last of your worries.

Do another at 50k and 100k. And if you still have it, 150k. I too think every oil change is excessive unless you did something unusual with/to your truck.

I got the kit to suck some oil out of the dipstick. I'll do 5k AND LEAVE THE OIL IN and test the same oil at 10K and based on the results, if favorable, leave the oil in and test the same oil at 15k.

Yes. My philosophy as well.

95% (estimate) of people trade in or trade up for reasons other than worn out engine. In fact, i've never worn out an engine. Seats, yes. Exterior paint, yes.

I’d love to tell you some story about how I will keep and religiously maintain this until 250k+ miles.

The truth is that I will probably keep this somewhere between 30-80k miles before my family outgrows it. At that point though, it will almost certainly be sold to someone I love.

This was a simple, cheap test that I can do very early in the life of this engine/platform to confirm what I already believed to be true: this engine is “easy” on oil and it only running ~70% of the time does lead to significantly decreased oil “stress”

Using quotes here because I am far from an expert and have no interest in debating these topics. These are my observations of my vehicle

An interesting anecdote here is that I also changed the oil in our families 3.6 Grand Cherokee at 6,100 miles on the oil.

The Jeep shows TBN at 1.9 instead of 3.6, as well as increased viscosity that indicates it is nearing the end of its life. This car gets idled 5x more than the Maverick and has its whole life.

Based on the results of these tests, I will not even worry about changing the Maverick’s oil until 10k or the OLM indicate otherwise (extreme use-case). On the contrary, I will make sure I change the oil on the Jeep before 7500 miles.

This is probably the timescale I would test on if I do it again.

I am curious to see your results as well. Will be very easy to build out a “wear profile” from even a few data points.

I also did an oil sample with about half the miles and the oil thinned as well. I replaced with OEM oil and will run the same amount of time and sample again, but after that, I am moving to Motul 300v 5w40.

Updating this thread currently at 55% oil life since the October oil change.

Interesting that at 50% oil life during the summer I already had 6600 miles. At 55% now after a few months of cold weather I am just now over 3000 miles on this oil.

The hybrid runs the engine a lot in cold weather to keep its occupants warm. This can lead to quite a variance in oil change intervals.

It's great that the oil life monitor takes ICE runtime in consideration, and is not based on just total miles the truck has been driven.

When the engine block is mfg'd there is a lot of residue that can't get flushed out.and I wonder how much of that residue is part of the data. Most engines go 200,000 miles these days, residue or no residue.
