☝This is probably your best bet.
Simple.
Low cost.
You'll enjoy the features.
Portable to use in other vehicles if you want.

Changing dash units is not easy or cheap. The dash units are encoded with your VIN number. So stolen (or salvaged) dash units have no resale value. A security measure. They won't work in a different vehicle, usually. You'll have to buy factory new.

This is false and bad information. There is no vin coding in any version of sync and used ones are sold all the time for the exact reason this whole post is about. I personally have made this very swap for $450 total cost on a previous escape I had going from sync 2 to sync 3. whole job can typically be done in 1-2 hours in most ford vehicles. This includes sync 4 as multiple people have also gotten that working in the maverick.

you're both partially wrong, you can get a Navigation Module/APIM but it has to be programed with your VIN to function.

except it doesn't need anything to do with the actual vin being coded to it. nowhere in the programing for sync is the vin inputed for anything. any spot asking for vin is so they can go to motorcraftservice.com/asbuilt and get the factory programing options to load before sending it so its plug and play since the average person buying it doesn't have the knowledge to use forscan. it can be put in and used without ever changing anything between vehicles. ive done it multiple times myself when testing changes. I bought a sync 3 unit from an 18 fusion and without changing anything put it in a 13 escape and was able to use it.

Check out some other threads here involving days of work, $1000, and reprogramming knowledge. Can an expert do it, sure.

My total cost on my swap for sync 3 nav was $300 for sync unit/ screen assembly. $65 for CarPlay usb. $70 for gps antenna. And 2days of making changes to get the option I wanted turned on in a 13 escape. I’ve been messing with sync 3 since 2017 when I got my 17 f150.
It’s not that hard to use forscan if you actually try

The only threads I’ve seen that had days of work were people doing the sync 4 swap

So far I have dealt with

2017 f150: swapped an 18 f150 module for hotspot support $50
2016 f150
2013 escape: sync 2 to sync 3 swap $435

And starting with the new Maverick the owner cannot add their own external keypad because the programming requires a dealership tool/device.

Times are a changin.

Not impossible to DIY.
Not for the amateur either.

My experience is : Nothing beats a Garman; except a newer Garman. Have yet to see a gps provided by a car maker that was any good; but I am just an old fart.
100% right. The screen isn't quite as pretty, but it works. If it doesn't, pitch it out yhe window, go to Walmart or BestBuy. Couple of hundred bucks, you're on the road.
The built in breaks . . . hundreds of dollars and you're going to need a rental car while the dealer tears your baby apart. Good luck.

I haven't taken delivery of my Maverick yet, but it's a Lariat and has the built in GPS. I was just reading thru the owners manual, and it appears the GPS is the kind you have to update the map files occasionally (yearly)to keep them up to date?

If so, my previous expereince with this type of GPS has not been good. If you have to buy the map file, they can be expensive ($125/yr for my motorcycle), and they aren't able to take into account detours, road closures, or the new round-a-bout that went in 6 months ago.

I'm glad I'll be able to use Android Auto and my phones GPS.

How do the Garmin's work? Are they continuously updated with real world changes, or are they a static map file updated only when you download a new file?

I got my first Garmin in 1996.
Was monochrome.
Gave Lat / Long / Alt / Time / Speed / and not much more. Still works today.
But only tracks 8 Sats.
No maps onboard.
Had to connect it to a laptop.
But, I had a 14" diagonal screen way back then! I was one of the first beta testers.
