OK, Hear me out: strange 'fix" to odd braking problem...

I've had my Mav about two months now, and in all that time I've been bothered by the braking, which has been nowhere near as effortlessly unnoticeable as I'm accustomed to in my work CMAX. Every single time I stopped, whether in traffic or utterly alone on the road with no one near me, the last seconds of the stop were always.... not a "lurch," that's too strong a word, but a noticeable mini-dramatic stop thingee. Sorry, I don't know a better way to describe it. I tried literally everything, assuming this was just a different vehicle for me, different brakes, I needed to find the sweet spot for using them, but no... Same thing no matter what. Enough of a thing that I noticed it on every... Single... Stop.​

I did vaguely recall reading some thread here over the past year where someone mentioned, in passing, that the collision avoidance sensitivity might come into play? Something about when he vehicle is approaching another, like coming up to a light, it actually begins a little behind he scenes "prep" and starts doing so e pre-braking for you, subtley. Okay, that doesn't explain why it happened even if I stopped at a light with NO one in front of me, but good to know.​

Anyway, after two months of just about telling myself oh well this is just how a MAV brakes, I happened to be in the menu one day and decided to knock the collision sensitivity down a notch, from mid to low sensitivity.​

Damn if my MAV is not now braking "normally, just like I'm accustomed to in the CMAX, braking in a way I never again have to even give a thought to.​

I'll openly admit I don't know enough about all this collision avoidance new fangled stuff, but I don't know what else to say.... two months on mid level and every single braking is a last minute umph, then I change the one setting and it's like I have a different truck.​

Just putting this out there, in case anyone else is experiencing it, or if anyone has some wisdom on why that simple change made such a difference, immediately. Weirdness, for sure. I'm just happy to not have to baby the brakes every single time now and hope to moderate that umph anymore.​

There's a 99.6% chance you are experiencing a coincidence.

Nope, nothing like that at all.

I'm having a hard time believing it's just coincidence when the difference was both instantaneous and so remarkably different from the way it braked ever since day one. Like I said, I spent EVERY drive trying to ease it in, test different ways of braking, feathering the response, nothing made any difference at all. Changed the setting and BOOM. Night and day.

I don't know enough to know, but makes me wonder about a programing issue with the module that controls the collision avoidance system. Like it's programming was set too sensitive or some such thing.

Mine only does that last minute grab when it’s very damp out or raining. Otherwise it acts normal 99% of the time on dry days. See how it acts for you on a rainy day.

Glad it's working better. You are aware of the software updates that address the "grabby brake" issue on Hybrids, right?

Yes, but that refers to a low speed, intermittent grab. This wasn't that. It was a consistent, every single time little uhmp right as the vehicle stopped.

I'll give it a try. My brakes don't always get 'grabby," but it does happen pretty often. I'll let you know my results. Doesn't make sense but worth a try. Software/calibration can sometimes make no sense at all.

Software "programmers" tell me software doesn't "go bad" over time.

Yet in my years I've seen it happen dozens upon dozens of times across diverse industries.

It's naive to think software is not the culprit. We're on the eve of software writing software. For the first 75 years only humans could make mistakes.

I wonder if this is similar. The one thing I have noticed on my 2.0 FWD is after coming to a stop at a light, or anywhere, when I release the brake pedal and start up again , the brakes seem to be "locked on" and release all at once. Personally, I am not a big fan of all this electronic control of everything in the new vehicles, not only just the MAV. This braking issue has me concerned when the need arises to change the pads. Juice brakes have worked fine for many years and they don't need electronic assist to work.

So it's DEFINITELY software programming when the truck changes from just regeneration to the hydraulic brake pads. Every time they stop it has to use the pads at the very end.

Since it was a recall that "fixed" the really extreme transition, I'm sure the current transition could be improved still- we still can tell some difference instead of a smooth deceleration. And it's worse when it's wet out!

I'll have to play with this setting and see what happens.... Doesn't make sense that it would change anything when there's no cars in front, but weirder things have happened!

So.....

You could/should switch the setting back, and see if the symptom returns.

Did you do that? Will you?

FYI I just changed mine from normal to low. I'll let ya know if I detect any difference after a few days.
