nice bike! is it yours? i just love the art deco front wheel fender :)
Yes it’s mine.
1952 Schwinn Black Phantom, fully restored. Pretty much like you would have bought off the showroom floor back then. Super expensive in the day, $99 in 1952. You could buy a new car for 2K then.

This 1952 year had the locking front fork, automatic rear tail/stoplight and the optional $9 front expander, (drum), brake. All years had the front fender light, tank horn and leather saddle.
Only kids with wealthy families got these.

I ride it sometimes.

It was the first thing my Maverick ever hauled in the bed.

Porter walls. When I was a kid, my dad had a 1950 Plymouth Deluxe that he had for years. He was a public transportation to work guy, so did not put lots of miles on it. Mom didn't drive.

At one point, my older brother decided it was time to spruce it up. He presented dad a package of porter walls. Nobody in the house was a "car guy". (I was 7ish, bro 15ish)

The weekend came, and install day was upon us. The gas station down the road was closed (must have been Sunday) so deflate / reinflate was out of the picture. My 15 year old brother had a brilliant idea. "Let's put them on under the hubcaps!" (full size 15" wheel covers. Deluxe, right?) Awesome!

We later went out for a spin. We came to a red light, and another motorist pulled up next to us. "Hey Buddy! Your hubcap and whitewall fell off a couple of blocks back!" That was the end of porter walls for us.

I was always a white wall fan, but as I've gotten older, I like the black sidewalls...actually, I sort of like the raised white letters, which are also somewhat old-school, but look good on some vehicles. When the factory tires are shot, I might just put something with white letters sidewalls, but that's hopefully a few years away.

With fender skirts, I guess flipper hubcaps wouldn't fit on the back. Loved those old Merc's.
I'm sure they would fit, there are a pair of them in the trunk, I had asked him about the non matching hubcaps years ago, he said it was a thing back in the 50's, his first car was a 1950 Mercury in the 50's, he had bought this one in 1981.

i actually learned to drive in a '65 GTO just like this with a stick shift Hurst T bar shifter 3 on the floor, your photo brought back a flood of fond memories :)
From the factory the first GTO's were rated at 325HP and the three deuces was 348HP. In the Lemans intermediate body, they were pretty fast!
A note though, the 64 had the two side by side headlights, while the 65 went to vertical dual headlights, and they added 3 inches to the length of the body. Otherwise, the looked really the same.

Back in the day we called the fixed three spoke hubcaps like the ones above flippers while spinners were the ones that kept spinning when you came to a stop. The smooth ovals were called moon discs.

I learned to drive in a 1960 Sedan Deville. It had auto diming headlights, power windows, and cruise control. I broke an engine mount because that massive V8 that would rotate the car a couple of inches when you revved the engine.
My dads ‘70 Sedan Deville also had broken engine mount, like a bucking bronco…

Looked up on Wiki (I know, not perfect, but usually accurate) "spinner" like the three spoke one in the pic:
The spinner or "knock-off" was first patented in 1908, a threaded, winged nut designed to keep the wheel fastened to the hub.
The spinner hubcap was introduced into the commercial vehicle and passenger automobile market in the 1930s.
During the early-1960s a center spinner cap that featured a rigidly mounted propeller-like center element, usually with two or three projecting "blades" was introduced and was intended to simulate the knock-off hubs that were used on vintage and classic vehicles.
The modern spinner device is a decorative kinetic attachment to the wheel of an automobile. The spinner covers the center of a car's wheel and is designed to independently rotate by using one or more roller bearings to isolate the spinner from the wheel, enabling it to turn while the wheel is at rest. These spinners were popular during the early-2000s within the hip-hop community of the United States Since the mid-2000s, they are gradually fading out of vogue in popular culture.

The "flipper", though, was this:

I don't know about other parts of the country but I remember what we called them in South Carolina.
