Anyone else here apply Cerakote to the plastic trim on their Maverick yet? I debated whether or not to do it so soon but decided if applied properly now it would protect the plastic instead of waiting a year or so for it to start to fade. I washed the plastic with Dove dish detergent but did not use any wax remover as there was no wax on the plastic to begin with and Dove does a great job of stripping wax anyway.

I did some research beforehand and discovered that there seems to be a trend of sorts with Cerakote having some issues with Jeeps. Streaking and areas turning white after a day or so. Even some mention on Jeeps of the Cerakote blistering due to the gassing off of the type of plastic they use. I think some of those issues can be attributed to the fact that Wranglers have what appears to me to be rubber from fenders, not plastic and Cerakote is not to be used on rubber. People need to read. :sneaky:

No such issues so far with my Maverick. It came out slightly darker richer looking with a slight sheen and very slick feeling. Water beads up great on it. So far so good.

I first used Cerakote on my 2010 F150 3 years ago and it brought back the black in the plastic. I applied it to my Mav a month ago just to protect it and it looks great. I highly recommend Cerakote.

Thank you for the reply. To be honest I've been kind of second guessing myself doing it so soon but good to hear others have the same thought. LOL. Yeah, I used it on my fender flares on my old Ranger FX/4 and it restored them right back to day 1. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend who told me I would be amazed at the results. He was right.

I'm also debating on whether to applying Cerakote Ceramic Coating to my brand new Lariat. I'm afraid that I will not follow the instructions precisely and ruin the plastic. I would rather apply it now rather than later on. I hope it works out for you. Please keep us posted. I have the Cerakote, just hesitating.

I've had two Jeep Wranglers, current is a 2015. I removed the original painted fenders soon after I bought it to put steel fenders. I do however know that they are made from a plastic material and not rubber. Thanks for posting about Cerokote.

Thanks for sharing. Any recommendations as to how to prepare the plastic before applying Cerakote? Does the weather play into it, humidity, etc.

Being a new vehicle and the plastic exhibiting no type of oxidation or fading I felt confident that a simple cleaning with Dawn would do the trick. It is my understanding that older plastic will have dirt and contaminants in the "pores" of the plastic and will need further cleaning than what my less than a week old Maverick needed.

I consider all this plastic to be a necessary evil. I do not like it but it is what it is so my thinking is if I can remediate some of wear and tear with Cerakote it will be all worth it now rather than waiting a year or so. A decision we all have to make.

When applying overlap by half, try to go all in the same direction and NEVER do a second coat. It does not need it and from what I understand nothing good will come of it. Try to get 100% coverage on your first go round.

Thanks for the tips. So a second coat is not necessary? does it say that on the label? I saw a video on YouTube where a guy was doing multiple coats (timed) on faded plastic. Thanks again.

I had mixed results with cerakote. Used it at end of April. Washed with dawn, dried for several hours. Applied it to the bed trim and rear bumper.
Next day had the haze and streaking on bed trim.
The rear bumper trim was ok. Glad I didn't use any on the wife's cars.
I probably didn't apply it just right. I want to blame it on the nearly continuous high humidity in my area.

Have yet to do it on my Maverick. I did it on my 2014 Flex in May 2021. One treatment.

Still looked new when I traded it in for my Maverick in Nov 2022.

I recommend after washing trim to use wax and grease remover before applying.

Also blue painters tape between paint and trim to prevent getting it on your paint.

Make sure to wear gloves, buy extra ones.

Moisture will ruin the application so yes, I would blame the high humidity. Also temps should be cool and avoid direct sunlight. The temps and humidity up here has been ideal for the past 3-4 days I've been doing this.

Yeah, taking my time, checking each section I do carefully. Making myself to not rush it and muck up the works.

Bob explains the best conditions. Low humidity, no chance of it getting wet for 24 hours and avoid direct sunlight.

I contacted Cerakote directly. They do not recommend the trim restorer wipes on new plastic. I used a Stoner ceramic protector with excellent results on my new Maverick. For sun damaged plastic, I’ve used Flood’s Penetrol with outstanding results. This product is used for thinning oil based paints but really works well as a plastic trim restorer.
