The main problem with Tacos is the fact that not all of them are 4x4, yet most of them look like they are 4x4. It gives too many the perception that they are all soooo awesome.

I live down a decently hardcore driveway, some vehicles like my 96 Bronco or a 2dr Jeep will make it up in 2wd with a little wheelspin. But to this date no 2wd only vehicle has made it up our hill. My mother-in law lives in the valley with us, and she is always meeting new people that come and help here with her projects or have dinner or what have you. Last night she had some young 30ish year old over for a garden project and a meal. He came down in a 10 year old Taco with black bedliner paint, it was on basic ATs and looked the part of a 4x4. So late around 9pm I heard him leave up the driveway. Sounded a little fast, but whatever. About 15 min later I hear something else, more faint. I got Josi to turn down the TV and by the time she did the sound was fading. I thought it must have been a helicopter going out to Hana. Well another 15 minutes goes by and mother-in-law rings the pants alarm, and says "can Shane come out for a minute". I knew what was happening. I got out there, with pants on, couldnt find my flash light so I went in the dark. When I got to her I heard him say something like "I know, it looks like a 4 by...". So just say need a pull? And head over to my Comanche to get my easiest strap and shackle. I get him hooked up to the Bronco since its the heaviest and I tow him up the hill. While doing all this he tells me how he really thought he could make it but just got soo close.

Thats the problem, they are just soo close...

By the way my mother-in-law drives a AWD Ecosport that lifts a tire when going up the driveway. Still does it with ease.

PreRunner Taco= 0

Also this is the 3rd time I have towed a 2wd Taco up the hill that thought it was fine. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

This is the driveway after a big rain. I used our ZJ for a lil "cleaning the ruts"!

What degree of slope are we working with there? A section of my driveway up to my cabin is in the 15 degree range, but only for a 150 feet or so. If the FWD's don't keep momentum, they usually start skidding out on the gravel, since the slope bias (up hill) pushes everything to the rear. RWD is usually OK for that same reason.

It has bits well over 35 degrees in the middle of the turn. It's like a fast steep switchback.plus everybody spins their inner tires when they are in a hurry and with different wheel bases you end up with holes in the inside track at the steepest part. Basically you go into it at 10 to 15 degrees then it starts to turn as rapidly as the slope increases. Then the slope tapers off to 20 degrees or so as it straightens out into the loosest gravel(not much mud glue). Its actually pretty fun for me. I must have towed vehicles up a dozen or so times in the last 6.5 years. Maybe more including breakdowns. At least 4 Toyotas though. All thought they were off-roaders.

Doesn’t every single truck on the market come in 2wd?

Yeah but typically the 4wds are more aggressive, bigger tires, and raised suspension. Tacos get like a 3 in lift, ATs and off-road stickers with 2wds that are commonplace.

there’s not a single taco that has a 3 inch lift. all tacos below the trd pro don’t have a lift. The pro has a 1.5 inch lift in the front and 0.5 inch lift in the rear doesn’t come in 2wd.

many Tacoma trims do not come with all terrains.

Also, you mean the stickers that say 4x2 on every single 4x2 Tacoma? How is that less noticeable than NO designation at all on the maverick or ranger? A fwd maverick ecoboost says nothing. A fwd ranger says sport on it. A fwd Chevy Colorado says nothing.

I’m just confused by the hyperbole is all. This is the same for all trucks

Where I live, where 1 out of 5 vehicle is a Taco, there is a ton of em running around with TRD stickers and the all ride high enough that I can see their lack of front axle shafts. I'm also not necessarily talking about the last couple model years. Toyota sells a lot more of the high boy 2wd-ers than anyone else. Which often end up as poser mobiles that I have to tow up my driveway.

35 degrees or 35%? 35 *degrees* on a slow turn is suicidal.

Sorry 35% I really do need to get some instruments on that hill though. Its very steep in the middle. Lets just say that before that area was a driveway, it was grass. One day I got to the steepest part with my ole craftsman and totally rolled it. Yet surprisingly did not get eviscerated. Years later I turned that mower into a wheelstanding go kart :ROFLMAO:.

Back in the day, big tires on a 2wd truck would go anywhere.

My buddy just picked up an older prerunner V6 with locking rear diff, that I was amazed to find out was only 2wd. Come to find out none of the prerunners have 4wd.

It'll go down my driveway, but it'll be towed up by my Bronco. It also doesnt like bigger heavy 4 doors like Expeditions and such. They spin a good bit. My CJ used to go up in 2wd so I have theorized something like a Baja Bug might make it. But I have had 2 VW vanogans down here on the rope.

The problem with Toyota trucks is the same as with the Honda Ridgeline . . . They have horrible gas mileage for their size.
