Hybrid vs EcoBoost in Canadian winters

Going to look at some Mavericks next week. One of the big concerns with the hybrid is FWD. I live in Edmonton and travel to Saskatoon quite a few times a year and am personally leaning towards the AWD on the Eco... Edmonton and Saskatoon can both have harsh winters with heavy snowfall without notice.

What's everyone's first hand experience with the hybrid in the harsher Canadian winters?

If it were me I would do AWD EcoBoost. The hybrid technology for the Maverick needs some work.

I live in WA state, north of Spokane. Two winters with my Hybrid Maverick so far, with no issues.

It's not Canada, but we get cold and snow for sure. I have never owned an AWD, and don't expect I ever will.

My wife is from Edmonton, and having spent a few Christmases there, I would not buy a Hybrid. I live in Toronto and complain about the Hybrid's diminishing performance during -15-20, but in Edmonton where it's -35, you'll notice the battery problems in the winter. Currently, I will get a Deep Sleep Alert when the car sits for more than a day in winter. In Edmonton, I don't have to tell you, the temps are way worse. Perhaps if Ford can fix their reliability in the Hybrid during the severe cold, then you have a choice, but if it were me...eco. If you're okay driving a tiny pickup in a sea of 150's, 250's and RAMs in Alberta, then for now, Ecoboost. This is saying nothing about the 2WD versus AWD. Let's not even talk about the snow... Toronto plows regularly, but Edmonton salts and dirt their side streets. I would hate to see my Hybrid even with winter tires go through anything serious.

I appreciate the response! Somewhat contemplating waiting to see what they do for the 2024 models..

There were a few guys here from the Prairies who worked in the oil fields, but haven't seen them for a while. They didn't post any concerns over the winter.

We don't get the cold here on the west coast, (-11°C to -15°C), but the hybrid did fine with 14 inches of snow on roads that had not be plowed (not all season tires). If the Hybrid FWD can do it, I'm sure the ECO FWD can too.

Edit: Just checked Ford Canada's site, FWD ECO is not avaible in Canada anymore. If I select FWD it switches to the Hybrid.

The EB and Hybrid would have similar fuel efficiency on long drives between those cities. Unless your driving a lot "in town", the gas savings will be minimal for the Hybrid.

The Hybrid is cheaper than an AWD EB, which makes it attractive. Beyond that, your use case seems more like AWD EB. The Hybrid will be just fine in the snow (In my opinion), but the AWD will be excellent. I plan to have a snow tire wheelset for my Hybrid.

I suggest getting a set of winter tires. There won't be many advantages with AWD over FWD with the stock tires.

I agree. I am in Ohio so a bit milder but the fuel efficiency drops in the cold. I have not really analyzed the the numbers but my gut says an average of 10+ mpg less performance. Mostly drives 5 miles or less.

!0 mpg reduction in winter is normal. My 2005 Prius gets that and I am in Maryland.

My hybrid handled the Edmonton winters just fine! The reduction in MPG was within range of any car's reduction in range in -30 temps but still got 6-7L/100kms on highway driving. You need to get winter tires though, which is more more important than AWD vs FWD assuming you're just driving on roads
