Tremor tow vs 4k tow package

The upgraded radiator capacity on the 4k tow kinda baffles me. It is indeed a higher cap, but only half a quart more than stock. That must be a hell of a cooling fan they have on that bad boy.

I think that fan is a bad boy - I had it kick off the 2nd stage once and it sounded like a quiet rocket.

My biggest tows on the Tremor will be under it's advertised 2K limit. A ATV trailer with 2 onboard and my 17' deep V fishing boat. So I have no concern there.
The nugget I'll take from this conversation is the availability of a off the shelf cooling fan should the need arise. Offroading can test cooling capacity as much as towing 4K because slow speeds can reduce the natural air flow experienced at road speeds.

And why would that be true? That RDU handles 350HP in the Focus on track days.
In most towing situations the RDU won't even be activated and running FWD alone like all other Maverick models unless there is a loss of traction.

Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD.

As @fossil pointed out - it has quite a bit to do with the springs as much as the radiator.

The suspension has the lowest payload of all of the trims - which is telling.

A good 3rd party brake controller and a properly weighted trailer - you could exceed 2k lb tow limit for short distance and relatively flat tows, but I wouldn't try to maximize the Tremor's off road capabilities while towing above 2k

Yeah dont be towing those giant offroad campers like you see in youtube videos behind a V8. Big difference between a gentle pull on pavement in the wind or a steep rocky incline that you are flooring it to climb at 8 mph in the bush.

not the kind of track I was referring to but what in the world does 1/4 mile et that have to do with RDU durability.

One other thing about increased towing capacity. On older vehicles you would simply add a bigger trans cooler or even a secondary one. I have seen vehicles run ATF through the bottom of the radiator then through a cooler with a fan, and finally a small cooler tucked into a frame rail. In a description from Ford about the transmission used in the Mavericks. It spoke of not only trans coolers but trans warmers. That leads me to believe that the transmission operate in a very delicate heat balance. The only thing I would modify on these trannys is the amount of air reaching them.

One thing no one has really talked about here is heat extraction. I know of atleast 1 Maverick owner who has cut their hood(anyone remember who). But being a FWD based vehicle the engine, trans and alot of the exhaust(turbo plumbing) are all underneath the hood. I think an ultimate setup for both towing and performance, would include air bags, increased cooling fan size, and also a modified hood for heat extraction. That would make the Tremor comfortable in 4k tow range and the 4k package comfortable in the +5k range. For single day, short hauls, not in the mountains, outside of Death Valley.

I think alot folks biggest tow will be the occasional recovery or strap tow of a busted vehicle that may be over 4000lbs. I will occasionally tow home a Tacoma or something.

Also the RDU holds up to rock cralling in the bronco sport badlands. The BS also has a little higher tow ratting with the same drive train. The focus rs has been out from 2016 and after 7 years not many problems with the RDU.

What ever limits towing on the Tremor it does not look to be the RDU.

I would say the springs are the limiting factor.

Agreed. I've been wracking my brain for any reports of Mavericks overheating but aside of the one guy on his maiden drive home from a remote dealer, none. I believe his case was a factory defect that was easily corrected.
Now on the BS forum there have been water pump failures.
