Every time you remove the oil drain plug, pull the oil filter, you run a risk of something going wrong. A loose drain plug will kill that engine faster than old oil!
This is an important point that it appears most are ignoring.
Which is why I do it myself, wipe and inspect the filter mount, and properly torque the oil drain plug.

The only failures resulting from oil changes that I've known others to experience in my 40+ years of driving, were:
  • Under or over-torqued drain plugs, especially once aluminum pans became the norm.
  • Leaking filters, sometimes due to debris, but sometimes the old gasket fused to the mating surface. Always clean and inspect the gasket surface.
  • Failure to properly refill crankcase (or totally forgetting to add any).
  • Outward dents in the hood from leaving the oil fill cap on the air cleaner.
All the above have happened both by DIY'ers and professionals.

Regarding oil change interval, note that the hybrid's engine may only run 40%-60% of the time, so engine hours might be a better guide for engine oil changes than mileage. I changed my hybrid's oil initially at 7,000 miles with an indicated 62% life left. This time I waited until the oil minder recommended it. It was north of 10,000 miles by a decent amount.

I had my first oil change on my hybrid done at the dealer using the points that came with the truck. It only had 3500 miles, but was close to 1 years old. I wanted them to know they did it, so if I later had a problem, it was not from neglect on my part. I will probably do yearly oil changes rather then mileage changes because I don't drive that much any more. (I'm 82).

Thought about this, but have always done oil changes at 3k with older vehicles and 5k with vehicles in the last 20 years. Regardless have also always gone 230-240k before selling and getting a replacement, whether new or used. Could be over kill but it has always kept my vehicles going for a lot of miles and others say, pretty cheap maintenance. Do not go to the dealer for oil changes, but with places that I know with a solid reputation. Did ask about it and will get the proper Maverick filter as never changed oil in one. But did say he services the local police departments Ford cruisers.

Pretty good review...wait until the end; Scotty says the Ecoboost engine needs frequent oil changes and explains why.

Changed mine at 4k today and don’t need a lab to tell me if it’s good or bad. Old oil looked good.

I did have a good chuckle though. Not sure if it’s an FX4 thing but the skid plate is larger and thicker than a 5th gen 4Runner:ROFLMAO:

You sure about this? EV is not ready for prime time and we all know what happens when one hurry’s to get stuff done. Turns into a big cluster fu*k
Sure, EV sounds great but who’s going to cough the infrastructure out of their azz to charge ‘‘em all?
Ever been in Chicago hoods? Sometimes you’re lucky to park within 2-3 blocks of your house. If they do string up wires the gangs will steal it for scrap. The older Chicago houses have 50amp service so even if they have a garage. No dice on charging.
Not very well planned out now is it?
I am only going by what Ford says and does. I don't support it but they seem hell bent on destroying their brand.

So you can see that there is NO coolant in the oil? No fuel in the oil? Aluminum deposits in range? Etc.....
I don't doubt your oil was fine. But don't discredit having an oil sample done. Even at 4K. I certainly would on an EB, just to confirm absence of fuel dilution.
Car engines just don't wear out like they did decades ago when the 3-5,000 mile change interval was the norm.
On engines that really matter, fleets and company owners WILL sample oil to look for problems that would cause downtime and extra expense to repair damage if not caught in time.

I love oil centric forum posts. No matter what vehicle/engine is being discussed they always end up the same way. Dealer/family member/Rando on YouTube/dog said do it this way, run only this brand. Then the 23&Me oil analysis and personal experience guys pop in. Always a good time.
True. Marketing hype, blind brand loyalty, & old wives tales about oil are garbage.

An oil analysis is very limited, although good, in what it can tell you.

The only thing that matters on an oil jug or bottle you buy is these WSS numbers printed there:
Ford WSS-M2C962-A1 (0w-20 for the Hybrid only)
Ford WSS-M2C961-A1 (5w-30 for Ecoboost only)
Ford WSS-M2C963-A1 (0w-30, Ecoboost only when you might start it at below -10F)

So you can see that there is NO coolant in the oil?
Yes, glycol and fuel are easily detected by sight and smell for someone that's turned a wrench for decades and mine had nothing excessive.
I dumped a 22 Honda for fuel dilution and know very well what it is.

Does the oil monitor measure just time and miles or does it discern quality of the oil as well?
I asked the same question on my Diesel Cummins and was told its hours and /or miles not oil quality. I didnt find one manufacturer that actually had a measure for oil quality.
I'm interested in the responses to this .
Thanks

I looked at the 9000-mile oil change. interval. The dealer said 5000 is better. Your thoughts?

Totally too frequent & unnecessary changes with a hybrid and a waste of time and money.
