Spotted a Ram 700 at San Lucas Los Cabos, Mexico recently. Unibody compact truck with ICE.

The Ram 700 is about 2 feet shorter than the Maverick. It may be too small for the US market as is.

Ford did right by giving the Mav proportions like an actual truck instead of a car with a funny looking trunk like the santa cruz.

You can say that again. The Santa Claus - I mean Cruz I think, but not sure - looks strange.

True, there would be buyers. I wonder if it's any good though. Sometimes these 3rd world vehicles don't translate well to the US market. Look at the poor sad Ford Ecosport. It got upgraded for European duty, then upgraded again for US duty, and still sucked.

There will always be buyers if something is cheap enough. Another thing Ford did right was setting it up so the base model is cheap.

My mother in law just bought one and its perfect for her. Scrambles up our steep rutted driveway nicely and she is running about 28mpg.

Yeah, as an aspiring designer, I can tell Hyundai designers went for the, make it look radical to stand out in the segment approach. An admirable choice for a brand that can't rely on it's reputation for making great and reliable trucks like Ford can. But futuristic design seldomly endures. It's usually cashing in on the lastest and hottest trends. Those being big grilles and busy lines in the case of the Hyundai. But it's already looking dated.

Restrained, well proportioned designs like the maverick might not get the ohs and ahs from the crowd. But that's what lasts, it's what makes design truly timeless. The challenge is to have enough design elements to make your design visually engaging, but not so many that it becomes over the top. Ford and Mazda are some of the only brands right now that are nailing this balance, everyone else is struggling to get that balance down. You have gm and Toyota who smash a bunch of lines and elements together and call it good. On the flip side, you have VW, those are about as exciting as plain whole grain toast.
