IMO, Ford did not underestimate demand: they took a huge gamble on resurrecting a long ago abandoned market segment with a modernized spin on it and had their best guesstimators tell them what was best case to hope for (I'd read 100-110k 1st year) and they also knew worst case if it flopped. You also rightly identified the massive challenges with the global challenges in the middle of it all, which certainly affected what they knew internally was realistic for how many they could build if their best guesses turned out mostly correct.
Ya thats a fair way to put it. They likely did know that if it went well that they'd have more orders than they'd know what to do with. I was more trying to reference how capacity was exceeded by demand in such a short order window. It's not their fault that they don't have an unlimited capacity.

There have been dealers selling at MSRP all along. You just need to search them out. Sometimes at a distance but good honest dealers have always been there.

Best way to get a Maverick if you missed the order window is go, physically, to a number of dealers and get yourself on the list for one that was ordered and refused. Tell them up front you are only interested at MSRP. They will call when they have one, saves a lot of time searching if you have a good dealer.
You are correct, I found some even during the worst of it this spring. I had a very specific want list for my Maverick and missed the order boat in 2021. I called close to 40 dealers over a few months asking about stock, waiting lists for canceled orders, and mark ups. After I finally found my Lariat in May, my pops wanted a truck and within a day I had one for him in the morning, XL Hybrid with almost zero options and no mark up. Part of it is luck that an order was canceled the same day I followed up on my waitlist, but the other half is just spending some time talking to dealers and building relationships with honest ones.

Keep in mind they split the Copilot into two packages. For the full feature set you need both. Might want to review what the packages contain to be sure you are getting what you thought.

I didn't want the moonroof. Left off bed liner as its easy to get locally.

Mine is Carbonized gray, LOL. I didn't care but the wife said it had to match the motorhome :)

And my jealousy only continues to grow. Lol

As for the CoPilot, when I build a Maverick on the Ford website it seems like I can only get one of the two on XLT, to get the second one I belive I'd need a Lariat. I just wish I could get the Navy Pier interior on the Lariat as I'm not the biggest fan of Leather or Dark Blue on Brown. Give me Orange all day!

Unlike many of you lucky pioneers, I don't have the ability to check on my order status. I don't receive emails about constraints or have the ability to adjust my selected features to improve the chances that I receive my order, because I don't have one.

I'm in the group of people who only found out Ford had opened the order banks, AFTER they had closed them. And since then I've watched as dealerships have price gouged the few available units to a level only gamers looking for graphics cards two years ago would be able to relate to.

But that's all coming to an end. After months of watching the bubble inflate, it's finally popping. It's becoming an almost weekly occurrence that I find more XLs being priced below 30k, when just 6 weeks ago they couldn't be found below 35. Today I even found an XLT in Alto Blue with CP360 with less than 2k miles for 30,999. I know I haven't waited as long as most of you but the wait IS going to come to an end.

Between Ford underestimating demand, a global pandemic, and dealerships taking full advantage of both in regards to the Maverick, it's been pretty gruesome. But someday really soon we are all going to be piloting some pretty great rides down a highway somewhere and forget about all the annoyance we waited through and just be happy waited.

TLDR: Prices are dropping, don't overpay unless you have to, and don't buy something you don't want just to avoid waiting.

Question of the day, what's the weirdest thing you'll put in your dash cubby?

Mines got to be a small Elvira bobble head...
Agreed. I had been waiting to place an order. Got my 2023 order in when the order bank opened in September. In the last month I’ve searched in my state and called dealers due to needing a vehicle sooner than “someday.”This past Friday a guy backed out of his 2022 order and since I was the first to call they sold it to me. Dealer wouldn’t take a hold and said first person here gets it. The next day another dealer called me on another new 2022 customer order that the customer didn’t want.
The maverick I purchased is brand new. Alto blue xlt hybrid with the Lux package and copilot 360. I paid 2022 msrp, which was a better deal than my 2023.
They are out there guys, you just have to call all the dealers and continually check in. These dealers don’t reference their “call lists.” They reference the person that is at their door.

I have the ultimate unicorn.

New 2023 order, hybrid, lariat, lux, cp360, cp360+. Ordered 9/16, built 12/3, shipped 12/6.

But missing in action since 12/6.............................
Were you one of the Carry Over Orders from 2022 or a fresh order? I ordered my Hybrid XLT on 9/17/22.

the order window for MY2022 was open much longer than for MY2023 and had total production of ~109k far as I can tell. As always, the reliability of vendors meeting delivery deadlines has a huge influence on what actually gets built in the end. Since they capped MY2023 orders around 87k so quickly that tells me where confidence of internal forecasting was. There has been precedent with Ford to re-open order banks if things evolve over time to where they reasonably believe new updated forecasting indicates they could build "X" more units before balancing out for the year. It could happen ;)

I'm gonna be one cranky (er) s.o.b. if, after waiting all this time, my XLT gets built and then takes forever to get delivered. How long did Ford say it was going to take to ship?

New 2023 order. Never even heard of a Maverick until August 2022

87k but were those all retail orders? Wondering where fleet orders fit in. If they are not part of that 87k I can see 25 - 30k for fleet orders which puts them back in the range of 2022 production.

Ford has never said anywhere to my knowledge. My dealer quoted me 4 to 6 weeks based on past experience. But many people have tracked theirs and found it sitting at a rail for weeks because there are no truck drivers to deliver it.

And that assumes it gets delivered intact. I was allowed to sit in one at a dealer in August, but not drive it. Because in shipping someone cut the catalytic converter out. Either while on the rail car or at the rail depot. It was delivered to the dealer and they had been waiting over two months for parts to fix it.

Not so unicorn it seems. My loaded Lariat Lux Hybrid was ordered on 9/16 and it's in LA today headed up to Seattle. i guess with the number of orders, some of us were bound to get lucky though! Hope yours gets found asap! Good luck.
Congrats that's awesome. What was your ship date? Mine was 12/6. Ours might be on the same train. I was told it was going to Portland, but Seattle makes more sense for mine.

I ordered my 2023 Hybrid XLT early on 9/17 but I’ve received no notification it’s even scheduled to be produced.

I'll answer the question of the day. Meet Cow. Cow is not in the dash cubby today. Cow will be in the dash cubby forever - or at least as long as the truck is mine.

Cow is a tiny stuffed toy given to me by my youngest daughter when she was very young. Mid-late 1990's maybe. And Cow has lived in every vehicle that I routinely drove since that day. Always in some little cubby in the vehicle.

Well, the other question that I know everyone is wanting to ask is; if Cow is not in the cubby today, where is she?
