Hey Mav. Truck Club people,

My cousin told me some of the newer ford and lincoln vehicles are coming with ford's "Phone as a key" feature... From my understanding this is not possible to have on the 2022-2023 Maverick.... any word on the street about 2024?

No word on the street for anything related to the 2024. My money will be the 2025 mid-cycle upgrade, at the earliest.

Personally, I don't think I would use it. I don't even use the NFC functions on the phone for payments. I can't find the quote, but it goes along the lines of "the more you understand technology, the less you trust it."

It's just another way for manufacturers to charge you a subscription after a period of time.

I don't own a personal cell phone. We have one that replaced the home land line and my wife has a cell phone.

I like the concept, since I'm a sales guy I have to have my phone on me 24/7. I also had an RFID chip put into my hand, so I'll be looking to see if I can set up an RFID reader on the truck to use for lock/unlocking.

Yes, exactly that! They're hoping/trying to make monthly 💰 subscription services out of normal interactions with your vehicle. Toyota faced immense blowback a few months ago when they started delivering cars with most of key fob functions (like remote start) disabled and if you wanted them added back you had to pay for them with a monthly subscription. A quick Google search should be easy to find...

Did you actually have one implanted in your hand?

Unless I'm missing something, Ford chose not to monetize the services that other manufacturers do, so we get free diagnostic codes, free remote start, etc.

Granted, it's possible that Ford could charge for "Phone As A Key" if they wanted to, but so far, based on what they offer for free even on basic vehicles like the Maverick, I'm suitably impressed.

I don't know . . . lose your phone, lose your Maverick? Perhaps far-fetched, more likely one of your teenagers takes your truck?

You do know medically implanted electronic devices have been a thing for decades, right?

Straying away from the Borg Willy life, but honestly thought the concept was really cool and too funny to pass up. It holds my business card... tapping someone's phone makes for great conversation... and is how I enter my home at the moment. How can you pass on a product from a company called "Dangerous things" that's made in America?? haha

Yes I actually have a chip in my hand haha it's encased in bio-glass that is chemically unreactive in the body. The glass is in the shape of a grain of rice (although its closer to the size of a long Tylenol pill), and can take impacts, x-ray, and MRI (the part I was nervous about) without any issues.

For the "lose your phone lose your maverick" thing, I'm sure it's possible. I haven't used the feature (I would hope they thought about that) so I'm not sure if you have to unlock your phone or put in a code or something but I definitely see the concern there... hopefully no one takes my hand!

I have seen mods where people put a reader in their lower front window, lower driver side mirror in the plastic, and so on... definitely something I want to do.

**Edit: Darn, looks like someone already had a thread for this whole phone thing... hopefully this conversation spices things up enough to be forgiven for the double thread...
