I use a Pixel6 as a backup phone that is de-Googled running CalyxOS. The battery will last just over a damn week just sitting there.

My phone would overheat in about five minutes leaving it on my dash in Florida.

I've been using an app called Sygic for about 10 years now (at the time I bought it, it was the only app that had maps in some of the places I went for work like military posts and such). It also has some add-ons including a Dashcam app, "Real View Navigation" where it overlays your route on the camera image and can also be a HUD display sitting on the dash reflecting off the windshield.

I am actually surprised built-in Map apps haven't offered similar features sooner. They are cool and nice to have as long as the phone doesn't overheat and keeps a strong charge.

I used an android dash cam app called DailyRoads Voyager Pro. Instead of a dash cam I used it as a handlebar cam on my bicycle. The app worked fine on several older Samsung phones. But the vibration would break the phone’s image stabilization, usually in less than a year. So I eventually bought a GoPro.

One potential problem using a cell phone as a dash cam, very few thieves will break a window to steal a low end dash cam. But that might not be the case for a cell phone.
