I had a '62 in high school. It was lacking in power, short a gear or two, and the steering was vague to the point of being funny. It was perfect.
yah they have their issues! The first ones Ford made in '61 would stand up on the front bumper in a panic stop. So Ford recalled them and bolted 200lb cast iron weights in the back, sandwiched between the fuel tank and the bed.

Then there is the engine inside the doghouse, nowhere for heat to go except up into the cab. So the carb boiled off and the cab reeked of gasoline vapors for an hour or so. Of course, it would be really hard to start after that. And tend to overheat badly on a hot summer day.

But lots of mods that can be done, 4 wheel disc brakes, dual master, fuel system upgrades, ignition upgrades etc. if one doesn't insist on all original.

I meant more from the aspect of driving with a load. Stopping, accelerating, climbing hills, etc.
Even if the bales weighed, say 80 pounds, that'd still be less than 1,300 pounds of payload for 16 bales. Less than the standard 1,500 pounds.

EDIT: intended to quote the comment about comparing the Mav to an F250... Maybe point is made already...

Looks good. I never got around to getting hay bales in my Maverick when I was seeing someone who had horses (always ended up using her F-250), but it handled 800+ pounds of feed with ease.

I still have the pair of 5 windows with the big six engine and Ford nine inch rear ends. Other things have taken priority, but I will get back to restoring them one day. They put a big grin on my face, and I love the classic curves and huge 8' bed. I'd turn them into daily drivers if they could safely do over 60. A bump in the road at speed on a curve, and these 2800lb solid axle trucks want to go flying.
Now there's something you'll be able to tell your grandchildren. There's just something special about these older vehicles. Some of us feel it, others not so much. Somehow the vision of the builder shines through and touches us. Thanks for sharing!

Once the truck is equating it is time to remove some of the load. I would be concerned about driving at high way speed with this much weight. Perhaps additional weight in the cab would help balance the load. How many times have you seen pick ups on the side of the road broke down and over weigh. I read a warning about over tightening the tie down straps. If the straps are over tightened you can damage the unibody construction. If this can happen in the securing process the same can probably happen with poor loading and balance. i feel if you have squat you are poorly loaded. Be safe and make more trips.

Or, trailer some of it.

I agree, trucks meant to do work, not just sit around looking pretty.

No mav yet...here is a photo of my old '66 Ford Econoline hauling firewood. 1500lb bed capacity. Yep, a unibody like the Mav.

I like them pretty too...same truck a few years later.
I love the '60s Econoline and Corsair Pickups/Vans. I really like the primered 5 window in front of the garage in the background.

Put the Maverick to work today, hauling hay for my wife’s horses. I was able to stack 16 bales comfortably in the box, and probably could have done 20 if I wanted to go a layer higher. It had no problem with the weight at all, it just doesn’t have the box volume of my old F-250. I’ll just have to make more trips.

Hey, what ever works. I had a friend in Muskogee Oklahoma that bought a new Dodge Caravan when they were introduced in the early '80s. He took the two back seats out and used it to haul hay to his horses and cattle. The only difference is the Mav. is made for that work

Yes, they are my favorite too. When it comes to the 5 windows, the '65-7 with the 240 engine and heavier frame construction are choice. '67's the best because of dual master, backup lights. Those are rare indeed, only a few handfuls made and less still going.
