Three years ago, I'd had my new Hyundai Tucson for about 2 months and some idiot rear-ended me in stop-and-go road construction traffic. Damage, about $1500. Well, today, after almost six months of owning my Maverick the same damned thing happened again. Fortunately, the only damage this time was white Toyota paint to my trailer hitch. I don't understand why people can't pay attention. (Audio removed due to some language.)

glad it was very low speed at least. was that guy on his phone or something?
I don't know what he was doing. I clipped the video because it was initially too big. But he had been stopped a good distance behind me. Then he just started rolling along. It does look something like a texting or phone distraction. I do know he was on his way to the VA, as that's where I was going, and I saw his Toyota there. Funny thing, I saw him a few miles away after I had left.

Looks like somebody needed ACC on their Toyota. 🤣😂

I’m betting they were watching their favorite Ticktock video.

Glad it didn’t hit any harder than it did.

I once watched a guy let his bigassed SUV roll backward while at a stop light on a hill. He gets out of the car clearly angry at being "rear-ended" and ready to give the driver behind him hell. Unfortunately for him the guy behind him was a cop in a marked car who had been leaning on his horn in warning to no avail. (SUV was blasting music). Watching his face change from anger to "oh shit" was glorious.

The moral of the story is that stupid shit happens all the time and be glad nobody got hurt.

The biggest problem are the phones. People, especially young people, cannot seem to stay off of them while driving. It's mostly the texting. I wish people would just cut it out. Their text message is not more important than someone's life and property. They need to grow up.

Glad you're ok and that it was just minor damage!

I guess there are different kinds of drivers. Some are easily distracted by passengers, phones, etc. They seem to treat driving as something that is easy, casual.

Personally, I'm the type of guy that treats driving as a deadly serious activity. I prefer to not hold conversations while driving, won't touch my phone or eat while driving, will pull over into a parking lot if I absolutely must actually touch the phone, I'm hyper-vigilant about scanning mirrors/gauges/road, always looking for a defensive driving exit path, always signal, etc.

It's a tradeoff. I haven't been the cause of any wrecks, but I can't do long drives, as the mental effort is eventually taxing.

one of the reasons I put a hitch cover (homemade out of an old cutoff hitch with ball) on the truck. sticks out just a little, not enough to trip over going around the truck, but enough for just such an occasion.

I've been thinking about doing that. Fortunately, this was a ver slow bump and my hitch is out just far enough for today.

In 45 years of driving I have been in 7 accidents. One I got side swiped by someone that thought they needed to pass me as I was turning left into a church parking lot in a school zone.

The other 6 was me getting rear ended waiting at red lights and once waiting for pedestrians in a cross walk. None serious, but all generating insurance claims.

What are these people doing? There is no excuse.

One more reason I dont want an understated color. Also a good reason to put a hitch ball in it or some other eye catching thing like a boat propeller or bright pink truck nuts. Maybe some bold cryptic bumper stickers, like "hybrid alien tentacle baby on onboard". Stand out, dont get hit. Nobody ever hits my old vehicles because they are too mean looking either with patchy roll on bedliner paint, giant steel beef bumpers, or a pintle hitch and a wooden tailgate held on by bungees. No one even wants to get close to them.

Situational awareness should be paramount should that happen to anyone here, especially a very low-speed event.. It’s not uncommon for that to purposefully occur in order to get someone out of their vehicle in order to rob/carjack.

Good luck OP
