For those still on the forum who already have their Maverick or those still waiting for one, did you purchase an extended warranty or maintenance plan, plan to do so or still undecided?

There are pros and cons to having one or the other - or none. Looking to see the community's sentiment.

Provide comments/rationale as you like.

With it being a first yr vehicle, and my desire to drive it for as long as possible I will gladly pay for a long warranty to have piece of mind. If I wreck or sell I get a prorated portion back. Win win in my eyes

If I keep mine beyond the base warranty (the plan is to do that) then I will for sure buy a Premium care plan. I worked for Lincoln for 8 years and have a lot of faith in those plans. The maintenance is pointless. Unless things have changed with what maintenance is required (and I doubt it has) you pay more for the plan than you would just paying for the services out of pocket. (somewhat dealer dependent on individual service pricing)

Waiting for my truck to arrive here. Definitely won't be doing a maintenance plan. I have the ability to do all maintenance on my own. Unless we're talking about pulling entire drivetrains and transmission rebuilds, you'll find me doing it myself.

Not interested in an extended warranty either. To me, it's like when a tire place tries to sell you a "tire protection package" 🙄. At the end of the day, it's just a money grab. I think we've passed the era of when cars legitimately couldn't make it past 75k to 100k miles without major issues.

I may sound cheap... I definitely am LOL. But that's also why I'm here, buying a Mav, instead of a Ranger or F150.

I bought a used Infiniti, added the extended warranty, and a couple of extras like death insurance (paid off the car if me or my spouse died), and job insurance (no car payment necessary if I lost my job due to layoff). The only one I used was the job insurance, really came in handy when I was laid off for 3 months. Ended up getting a refund on the other items as USAA stopped working with the provider of those items, but the peace of mind was priceless imo. I know Clark Howard says they're a waste of money, but almost every extended plan I've bought I've had to use. Planning on buying one when I take delivery of my Mav...

I am still quite undecided. I like the idea of the extended warranty specifically for the reason @LM42 said. However, this will be my 7th Ford vehicle. Only one of them had a plan which I never used. Of the other six, only one would have benefited from the warranty. I find Fords to be reliable.

I intend to tweak some settings using ForScan (adding all drive modes, enabling lane-keeping assist and traffic sign recognition) which has me a bit worried about breaking warranties. Wouldn't want to find out seven years from now that I'm not covered...

The maintenance plan is nice since I am getting up in years and climbing under the truck isn't that appealing however, I do want to use a specific motor oil and not Motorcraft. That means either I do it or take it to a mechanic who will. The nice thing about the maintenance plan is that the dealer price may go up each year but you will be protected from those increases. One thing I wasn't aware of is that the plans also cover brakes shoes and pads in addition to the normal scheduled maintenance. I think the price is a "break even" amount based on today's average cost for the services.

I still have a month to make a decision but I do appreciate all the input from you and others.

I see your "cheap" and raise you "miserly"!

I plan on keeping my Maverick a very long time. I still have my 2012 Ford Focus I bought new. That model of Focus has had it share of issues. However mine has been problem free. The Maverick is going to be our 3rd vehicle. I am going with the 8yr/100k warranty with Granger. It's cheap enough justify the cost. Also it being a first year of a new platform, so I think it's a good idea.

I see you bought your truck from Granger as well. I asked LM to price match their $50 over dealer cost plan and the finance person got approval from the GM. The premium plan covers over 1000 items and I went for the 8/100000 plan to match the hybrid components. A first year vehicle is going to have a few problems down the road.

That's great that LM price-matched Granger's deal! I hope other LM buyers get that deal as well. The way I see it is LM, or any other dealer, either competitively sells a plan at cost plus or not sell one. I'm a Granger customer for my Mav so whatever I decide to do will be with them anyway.

My friend, you could not be more wrong. And unless Ford has changed something significant with these 2.0 direct injected engines, you are rolling the dice. I have had cylinder head, and complete engine failures on these many times. With Ford it is very nice that they have powertrain coverage, but it is still a gamble if you plan to keep past warranty. And if you think paying $35 or less for road hazard coverage on tires, then you are again wildly mistaken. I am in the luxury market now, so it is more painful, but I routinely replace tires for free for clients that bought road hazard instead of charging them the $500 for a single tire replacement. It is insurance in either avenue. Plain and simple. You aren't allowed to even drive without basic insurance, and full coverage if financed. That isn't a money grab. It is because they KNOW accidents happen. And I KNOW cars fail. A lot. ;)

I'm trying to "guestimate" the service cost of the different things fixed under the Premium Maintenance Plan. Some things are easy, others not so much. All the items in the table below are routine maintenance items or declared "wear" items from the brochure. The price I list for the shocks and brake pads are just the parts and not labor cost from Fordparts.com.

Service (8 year/100k miles, 13 visits)Interval (miles)Cost (est.)Total CostComments
Engine oil and filter changes7,500$70$910The "Works" 13 times.
Multi-point inspectionsPart of the Works
Tire rotationsPart of the Works
Wiper bladesAs needed$40$160Every 2 years. Part #: WW2249 (17528)
Cabin air filter20,000$32$32Part #: FP99 (19N619)
Engine air filter30,000$24$72Part #: FA1939 (9601)
Spark plugs100,000$175$175
Change brake fluidEvery 3 years$115$345
Brake pads and liningsAs needed$256$256At least once. Rear pad set = 92.17. Part #: BRF1954 (2200)
Shock absorbers/strutsAs needed$704$704Maybe once or not at all. Rear shock AWD, just one = $176.18. Part #: 18125
$2,654

If you can find an eight year/100k mile maintenance plan that costs less that this total (Granger Motors has one) then I would call it a deal. Plus, you don't have to worry about inflation.

Again, I have been away from Ford for almost 4 years now. So things may have changed. But, Ford did not (in the past) have brake fluid as a wear item that was changed on a schedule. The dealer can recommend, but if it is not on a mileage schedule you are not getting it. And similarly for the shocks/struts. If they hold up well, they are not getting replaced. So it is a bit of a gamble if it will pay off dependent on dealer pricing for the contract. But for sure, if you bought this and didn't keep the car to that over 100K mark then it is a waste. Even with my luxury clients I don't sell them contracts at low mileage as it does not pencil out in their favor. As the car accumulates mileage and the services get more expensive then the contracts become a MUCH better option. But I am also servicing cars that may have a $2600 service on them

I had weird pulsing sensation when driving our Chevy Silverado 1500 a few years ago. I took it to my trusted mechanic to do the repair. He diagnosed it as failure of the main computer module that controls the anti-lock brakes, and told me I needed to pick it up and take it "immediately" to the local Chevy dealer, and make sure they signed it in TODAY. It seems that it was the last day of my extended warranty plan, and the "covered" repair would be $50. If I had waited until the very next day, the part alone was $2700, and labor was at least another $500 or so.

Yeah, I'm buying the extended warranty on a relatively new design vehicle (brand new hybrid E-CVT with an equally new more powerful Ford-built electric motor). Not to mention all the chips and other computer stuff that was being cranked out from short-staffed assembly lines in Taiwan and China...

I am going to wait until I get the truck. Then go to one of the dealers that charge 50 over cost. Not sure which one to get. And a 5 year extended warrant is actually 2 years. Factory plus extended.
