I tried to pay a deposit. Figure it would be good for me, and good for dealer. Good for me to get some skin in the order so they don't try sell to someone else. Good for them to hold some cash for a number of months.

They told me they don't do deposits. Just not part of their system so didn't really have a process in place to address. I didn't make a thing out of it since the Manager signed the OTD price and I have the confirmation email from Ford.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the BS to start when it's time to make it official when the VIN is created but this is a risk pretty much anywhere around here. I've got a deposit on a completely different vehicle as well so as long as at least one of these works out I'll be good. both even better.

No reason for a deposit, once you have a signed DORA in hand and you get that confirmation email from work, you have a legal contract with the dealership for that truck.

Let be realistic, if you back out of the deal, the dealer can sell that truck in one day, without cost to them. The dealership knows this, but they will be happy to take your money and make money on it.

100% agree that it's a legal contract. But I feel like it deposit puts a little bit of emphasis on that. No deposit, they could try and make the claim that they reached out to me to buy it upon delivery and I didn't respond. Harder to make that claim if I was willing to put money down up front.

Also just because we have a contract doesn't mean it's easy to cover damages. I got to think that if I was going to go after them for doing something shady, having the skin of money already in it makes it easier to recover damages from court. With no money out, it's gray getting a court to decide you have any actual damages.

But ultimately keeping that money in savings making money for me is good. And it's not a big enough benefit for me to fight the dealer over the process. If they're going to try and screw me over, a deposit probably isn't going to change that much anyway.

A deposit is not required by ford. Any deposit policy is 100% at the discretion of the dealership. Including the amount. Some want $100. Some want $1,000.
And some deposits are refundable and some aren't 😉 your deposit may very 💰

We all know that the above that is bolded would never hold up in court if the dealership doesn't have proof they tried. Phone records or emails.... The issue is that most of the time (90%), the public will roll over and allow the dealership to get away with it. A Jr Associate at any law firm would be able to win that case.

Not true unless you have a signed buyer's agreement with the dealership(with the total price excluding taxes and DOC fees) the Dora only means that your order has been accepted by Ford

When I first talked to my dealer, 3 months ago, they said $500 deposit refundable. When I placed my pre-order they took a copy of my credit card and my driver's license. When I placed the order this week no one mentioned a deposit. I asked if they needed a deposit and he just grinned and said, "nope you are good to go".

I think they were just using the threat of a deposit to keep out anyone not really serious. Maybe to keep the flippers at bay somewhat as well.

I have two sign documents. First sign document is my build sheet showing the order number, build details, total MSRP, and us signed only by me. Second document is signed by both me and the sales manager, references the MSRP value, and shows the final out the door price including documents, tax etc.

You got lucky most people leave the dealership without the 2nd part of your order story and then the road is Rocky wondering weather or not they will get their truck for what they thought they were going to pay for it😁

Doubly lucky because I didn't ever have to go back in after I met with them and went through the details a couple months ago. The rest of it was done via email.

I was polite but firm with them. Told salesman I had confidence in them being honest, or else I wouldn't have been doing business with them. But I also told them with a purchase as big as this, I don't take anybody at their word. Told them I wouldn't be comfortable until it was established, I think they could read between the lines I wouldn't stop bugging them about it. Sent it to me shortly thereafter. I was shocked because they had actually even signed it first.

Lesson, if the dealer intends on being honest, and you are polite but firm, they should get you what you need to be comfortable. As it frequently works, the ones you don't need the written contract with are the ones it's not hard to get.

Still you can't take it at face value, Always get everything about your order in writing, Oh and don't forget to get it in writing 😉
