In 1969. OK, so it wasn't a pickup, but it was a Maverick. By the way, that would be about $16,062 in today's dollars.

Yup, those were the days.

I had just gotten my drivers license and lusted after a base Maverick in Spring, 1969. It was not to be then, but I did get a $19,995 XL Hybrid after a year wait from order this past June.

Was not going to miss twice. Just took another 50+ years! And I did eventually get a basic 73 Mustang Convertible. So all good.

BTW, the destination charge for my Mustang in 1973 was $56!

It’s a real eye opener on base prices back then. No power steering, no power disc brakes, no AC, no automatic, no nothing but an engine and wheels.

Everything always moves upscale. But still…

Nice! Worth a lot more now, of course.
Generally speaking, a 1968 Ford Mustang GT with a 390 cubic-inch V8 engine would be worth about $70,000 in good condition, according to the Hagerty Price Guide for collectible cars.

Maybe I'm strange, but the car I'd want to be able to buy the most from that ad is that sweet Country Squire (if that's what it is...looks like the LTD tail lights). My first car was a station wagon, so I have a thing for them.

I'm trying to figure out the 'custom sedan'. Did you get to name it if you had one built??

In many ways, you are right. Maverick is based on current Ford global compact platform (C2), is unibody like the 1961-1971 Ranchero, 2WD platform, and has a base drivetrain that is tuned for MPG. 4-door with smaller bed instead of 2-door with bigger bed, but that’s where market is now. Low priced, even with 2023 increase coming. However, XL is like a Lincoln for equipment, compared to the Falcon-based Ranchero, which was totally stripped in base form. Even one speed vacuum wipers.

I thought Ford might call it the Ranchero, until those tailgate pix came out in 2020.

Maverick name is good, given almost everything is a truck or SUV these days. Still means compact vehicle, just for today’s market.

Yeah, it's crazy! Even my red 73 convertible with a 6 is about $24K per Hagerty. About what my Xl Hybrid cost out the door.

In 1971, I got my first engineering job after graduating from college. My pay was $11K/years. I was driving a 67 Fairlane 390. Only accessory was AM radio. Bought car new for $2675.

I'm with you. Had a Colony Park and a Country Squire, before switching to an Aerostar minivan after the big wagons went out of production. Those facing "way back" seats were not real safe, but I sure could haul a lot of kids to ball games back in the day! Ford would market those wagons as 10-passenger. Well, sort of.

Custom or earlier was the Customline, those were the most bare bones you could buy, 6 cylinder manual transmission, 4 wheels a seat & a steering wheel. I had a few older family members who were 'careful' with money & those were the ones they bought.
