As I took delivery of my Maverick in December last year, the gas mileage was great. With the first tank I almost got 600 miles and moving forward I was averaging always 40mpg+. I had done all the software updates 2 or 3 weeks ago and noticed that the city mpg had gone down significantly but my overall mpg on my last tank of gas seemed to be unchanged. I still got great gas mileage when I drove freeway routes within LA. In the meantime I have 8k miles on the truck.
Now I took my first longer trip and drove with my Dad from LA to Arizona (a small town around 80-90 miles beyond phoenix) and back in one day. Total of 850 miles. The gas mileage was super disappointing. I got around 31.5 mpg average on this trip. I don't know if it was the strong side wind, the fact that I had my dad in the truck (I usually drive alone) or the fact I had to go up and down the hill, but this is not what I am used from this truck on the freeway. Until now, I actually got the higher mpg on the 30-40 mile trips of the freeway. I would get 50 or 60 mpg on some of my freeway rides. Anyone an idea what was happening here?
I wouldn't be disappointed with that. It is rated to give 33 Hwy, you got 31.5. Sounds fair to me. Speeds, hills, temperature, wind and many other conditions factor into it. Hybrids really only shine in the city/around town mileage. On the highway road trips the engine should be running almost the whole time.

gstiglitz, good observation, I am glad others are putting it together.

I am still getting 700mpt, @108° , so I am not a canidate...yet?

LS, I am getting 53mpg, so if I get the cable problem, it will show quickly, which gets me thinking, I guess there's a possibilty where the cable was partially soldered, but over time/road vibration it loses the little bit of connection and starts showing up as reduced FE.

I have noticed that the MPG the computer shows on the dash is ALWAYS higher than what you get when you divide the miles driven by the gallons bought. It makes you feel better to see the trips that say 75 MPG, but at the end of the tank the miles driven divided by the gallons is almost exactly what the EPA estimate was, 42 if you stay in town of 33 if you're cruising down the interstate at 75 MPH
Yep, don't believe the dash MPG. It's clearly a very liberal estimate and almost always 1 or 2 high. However, I'm routinely beating EPA at 43-45 MPG calculated manually. Got 47 once, but that was an outlier and I'm not exactly buying it. City driving of course. Looking forward to finding out for myself what she'll do on the highway.

Wasting money on 93 octane, not required nor needed.
I agree, however, many people think it is, not worth the bandwidth to convenience them.

Following a recommendation from the owners manual:
”For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions.”

I just did a 1500 mile round trip from southwest MO to southern MI and back. Ninety percent interstate at speeds of 70-75 mph. My average fuel consumption for the trip was 39.6 mpg, and it was HOT until I got to northern IN and southern MI.

I now have over 5,000 miles on my hybrid and it works perfectly. Love it!

It's not that complicated. Heat
It has gotten real hot here in Kansas City the last few weeks and the A/C is really working OT. My mileage was down a bit. After a couple of highway runs recently have got most of it back. A couple of short trips where the vehicle was very warm inside were the culprits. 85% of the time I am parked in a garage with HVAC. Last weekend I registered 39.5 mpg on two 35 mile trips of which 25 miles was interstate each way. I am going to throw the 3A max charger with float mode on my 12v battery overnight that is under the rear seat . Can't hurt.

I trust your charger has an AGM setting? You can attach the charger to the + jump post and - frame post under the hood. That's what I have done. My CTEK has an AGM reconditioning mode and I did that before my trip......just because. It took the charger about eight hours to complete the reconditioning mode. All is good.

Used the charger this afternoon on a AGM battery on my riding mower that would not turn over. Charged for 25 minutes and the mower started. Later after mowing during charging it went into float mode and would charge the battery for about 20 seconds, then would repeat after about 3 minutes. Charged for several hours hopefully it will start in a week or so.

Makin, keep ideas coming, I think recharge is 11.8vdc? I have seen 12.1, 12.0 and I believe I saw 11s but not alot, its usually 12.6 and then drops to 12.3 and then 12.1v which I thought was just generally too low for a 12v system. 60% charged, but I am coming over from old school, slow charge alternator systems, not 300v quick charge.

Another observation is the key turns on and it jumps to 14.5 immediately and mine stays there pretty much all time ignition is on, I think only once have I seen it drop to like 14.2vdc?
I am going to find a pp monitor with more stringent specs my current one is supposedly accurate to +/-0.1volts. on mine I see immediate jump to 14.7. since the pp reading is on an open circuit there could be a slight variance your 14.5 and my 14.7 could be closer together than 0.2 volts. In any case the recommended saturation charge voltage for deep cycle 12v batteries is 14.6-14.8. the amperage will be adjusted to power everything plus what's needed to charge battery. Depending on battery your 14.2 indicates your 12v is well over 80% charged.

On agm batteries leave on float mode until it goes into maintenance mode. Need to insure as close to 100% charge as possible. In winter it's best to store it in non freezing location and put agm charger on it for 3-4 days every 4-6 weeks. Or maintenance mode all time. I just rotate charger across all my batteries from time to time.

Makin, my pp connection is useless? it either shows 14.5v or on the bottom side it drops to 12.6v then drops off pretty fast to 12.3, 12.2v.

Is this just normal, i was looking for something else in-between, or am i just old school? Those are about all the readings i see 98% of time.

Ok, I just took a round trip LA-San Diego-LA (about 260miles total) and I got 44mpg on that trip. It seems that on this tank I will get 600 miles. I assume the main reason for the low mpg on my initial reported trip was: 1. too many up and down hills 2. It was super hot 3. I had an additional passenger 4. I had some stuff in the bed.
Over 11k miles and I still love this truck....

How hot was it. Was it better one direction than the other. With my Prius I've seen a difference between 50+ MPG and 35 MPG depending on wind. Also if it was very hot it affect the performance of the battery.

It was over 100. Mpg was both way similary low but on the way back I had some loads in the bed. I have somehow the feeling that after I passed 10k my mpg improved and I am almost back to normal, where I started with my truck.
