I agree with this, however their final numbers appear illogical for AWD non tow, just as their decision to not include a pigtail to add a harness. This will affect resale of non tow units and could easily have been avoided by creating a 3k and making it simple to add a plug and play harness.

keep in mind the SC doesn’t even have an integrated as an option
I do find that odd as well, I know most if not all f150s and super duties have a connector for adding a trailer brake controller.

My guess would be that its a combination of several things that increase the towing. While the tow hitch itself stays the same we go up to a 7 pin connector for the trailer to accommodate a trailer brake controller. That makes sense if you want to stop a trailer that could weigh more than the Maverick does.

The changed gear ratio in the rear end I believe trades off a little speed for a little more torque, that makes sense to get things moving and to lessen the strain on the transmission.

The transmission oil cooler helps keep the transmission from smoking under load, extra cooling makes me think extra load capacity.

If I remember correctly the AWD FX4 Eco already would have most of that, but not the trailer brake controller.

My guess is that the biggest factor in safely towing larger loads is trailer brakes.

I remember an older F150 that I foolishly towed a 5k boat/trailer with and while it pulled fine stopping was a bit sketchy as that trailer wasn't set up with brakes.

Only did that one once.
The FX4 shares a modified radiator with the 4K but does not have the added transmission cooler or gearing change

Assuming FX4 gearing is different than stock, which gearing do you get if ordering FX4 and 4K?

Also consider the SC doesn’t even offer an integrated brake controller (I don’t think) and yet they achieve a higher rating.

Fx4 doesn't get different gearing. Just the alternate drive modes, tow hooks, skid plate, different rear end shocks and a cool nifty sticker.

Oh it does get the better cooling setup and hill descent control as well.

consider the SC doesn’t even offer an integrated brake controller, just a pigtail and you need add the box, and yet they achieve a higher rating.

I would wager MY23 will see subtle changes in tow numbers and the addition of a plug and play harness for non tow Mavs.

When considering tow ratings one must remember, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

My old 2013 cx-5 GT had a 2.0L putting out 155HP. It, too, was rated for 2000 pounds but I promise you it would be absolutely miserable the entire time. I can't even imagine trying to merge onto the highway with a one ton load hooked to the back.

I bet the Mav does 2000lb without problem all day, every day.

The maverick was designed to help Ford with Cafe standards when they got rid of basically every car in their lineup. Building it beefier to handle more towing in the entry level would lower its mpg and raise the price.

As for the Kia soul, it may do that and might do it a few times but i wouldn't trust it for much.

Can and will are two different things.
no, it wasn't. CAFE standards are a tiny sliver of the business case for the Maverick.

Wondered about this. Many small crossovers beat it. Even a 2dr Wrangler believe is 2.5K. RAV4 etc.

4K is decent. But base should have been near 3 at least.
Are you a Ga. Tech or an MIT grad? In an FWD only, small truck bed vehicle with very little rear weight 2K is the safe rating. Swapping ends isn't funny! Obviously you could pull triple that on a straight, with no wind!

Yes but it applies to AWD no 4K as well. There are irregularities with the numbers. I bet they will be updated to reflect this in MY23

as well as the idiotic decision not to have a pigtail hidden under a panel for a harness on all trucks. Even Hyundai figured this out.

I hear ya, but how is the base FWD Santa Cruz rated for 3.5K tow with an aftermarket hitch and brake controller, but even the Mav's AWD FX4 eco has no rating beyond the same as Mav FWD base eco and Mav FWD base hybrid? I'm just curious about the safety calculus vs. the marketing calculus.

This entire thread is like asking why there is no Hybrid AWD option for the Maverick. Why? because they didn't make it.

Why isn't the non-tow more than 2K? Because Ford didn't want it to have a complicated margin with non-tow options close to the max tow 4k package. Is that what the OP wants to hear from Ford? NEVER going to hear it.

I can't help but think, who cares? Get the 4k or don't, its not expensive and is a solid value-add.

I would wager we won't. It will be kept simple - 4k, 2k or NoK. It is easy to remember, easy to communicate and Ford can stick by those numbers because by all accounts everyone seems to consider the numbers conservative. Want more? Can I interest you in a Ranger?

Man did I love my Ranger, until I sold it and got my Maverick. Without needing the 7.5k tow it was terrible in every other way by comparison.

not idiotic at all. It's called saving $ whenever possible to keep build costs down.

Under $2 to add a pigtail and on a truck or even an SUV these days it just reflects badly not to have a harness solution.

Sure. they may not up the 4K due to Ranger but guessing the 2k will be updated on AWD/no 4K and there will be a pigtail solution.

Right now their rating configurations look more marketing geared and I believe they may realize subtle changes are to their benefit.
