You bring up a good point. What if the dealer I take my truck to doesn't have the chips? Will they just keep my truck until they can get a hold of chips from another dealer or ford?
I think Ford would know by VIN (like a recall)

@fordvideoguy I see it now.....Do u think Ford will implement?
They wouldn't have mentioned it to dealers if they weren't thinking about it. I would say it's very possible.

Dear sweet baby Jesus, please let my Maverick get 100% built before this happens. 😇🙏

Seems to me to b a win win for everyone, Ford/Dealers deliver, customers happy. Reduce backlog of product. Product delivered and serviced with the future install of missing silicon/parts.....revenue generator for dealerships too!

This conversation with my dealer is going to be so funny. After 9 months plus Ford has finally built the truck they told you you could order, just the way you wanted it…but most of what you wanted does not work, and we would like to charge you an extra 10% which we did not discuss earlier…but you should never have taken our word for it.
Funnier still, I still want the damn thing.

Only issue I see is for the service department of scheduling and getting the chip installed. What about dealers that are sell vehicles to customers outside of your market area. Will the dealer in that area install them? Hopefully Ford will reimburse those service departments for time spent(which they will just like they do for recalls now).

Salesperson: 10k mark up (chips pending). So should I go in the back and draw up the paper work?

This is not the first time this has been considered. See the Detroit Free Press article from July 2021 below which describes Ford considering the same idea. But it seems they didn’t follow through in any significant way last time, so unclear if they are now going to do it, or just pondering the thought again.

https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2021/07/19/ford-chip-shortage-vehicles/8013003002/

BTW, no one installs chips in vehicles, they install assembled modules that contain chips and other parts. So any rework would only consist of installing missing modules in an existing wiring harness, perhaps with some enabling configuration updates.

And it goes without saying, Ford cannot sell a vehicle without the core powertrain, body and safety or compliance related modules (including the instrument panel) otherwise it cannot be driven.

Understood. If they can do it for chips, then why not for spray in bed liner?

Otherwise it would be foolish to accept an incomplete vehicle, imo. But my opinion doesn't have to be yours.
Bed liners are applied by professionals in bays designed for it. Your vehicle is prepped (takes the longest time) by a team and sprayed. Dealers can’t just “install” a bed liner like a chip. It would not be possible to have dealers installing bed liner without out sourcing 3-4k bed liner locations of different companies/brands. After all the leg work you would have an aftermarket liner with a shortened warranty; It would go from lifetime* to 3 years 36k.

As it stands most people can remove the liner and get an after market one for the same price with a better warranty. The “drop in” substitute was/is a cash grab and should have been only been an offer on lux packages.

spray in bed liner should be done aftermarket. Period. Even Ford outsourced it in Mexico. May I remind you the bed liner installers caused the fuel tank recall? Do we need another reason to skip the “factory” bed liner?

I'm put a deposit down for a complete vehicle. Not a have ass job. They can give me my deposit back and keep the incomplete truck. When you give someone a Lego set, do the want it missing pieces.....WTF. If Ford decides to do this, they need to give their head a shake.
Your dealer is salivating at the thought of giving you your deposit back, there are some people out there with serious impulse control issues who would probably pay $10k over MSRP for a truck with ZERO installed control modules and they can't even drive it off the lot at the time of purchase.

Am I the only one happy about this? I've been limping my current car along since August. I could live without heated seats and would prefer my truck to not be sitting in the Mexican desert.

Anyone who buys and drive home an unfinished truck is way to desperate for my taste
Amen! WTF is up with people liking this idea? Have they never dealt with dealer service? That's just what I think of when I think of a good time.. counting how many things the technicians broke while "fixing" something else.

No no no no. This is a terrible plan and I can't believe anyone would be desperate enough to buy an unfinished car.

I think this issue should be handled just like the dropping of packages to speed up production email that was sent out by Ford a week or so ago. Dealerships should be required to call their customers to ask them if they are interested in taking delivery of a new Ford Maverick that is missing some of the chips. I would be a strong "no" on doing this but my current 2019 Ford F150 is running fine and the Maverick is a want for me, not a need. At this point, if I was asked I would gladly switch to MY2023 if necessary.
