Scratched the paint on my Maverick. What should I do?

This is my first vehicle which I've had for about a month now and I pulled out incorrectly and scratched up my paint on a wood railing. It was mostly bumper, but it did expose a smaill amount of metal right at the border.

Should I get it fixed? How much will it cost? Will it rust if I don't fix it? If so, can it wait for a few months until winter is over?

Also, how should I get it fixed? Should it just need a buff and some touch up paint, or does it need a full repaint job?

I mean, this really depends on your expectations about the repair. Sure, you could buff some of it out but that’s down to the metal and legitimately requires professional repair. They can likely blend it in at the seams but any touch-up paint is just a temporary repair that will be very obvious to the eye.

That’s not going to buff out unfortunately. You can probably get it 75% better but it definitely needs paint. I mean if you got a paint pen you could get it 90% if you can live with it. Problem is finding the paint. Most of the light scratches would come out but compound is not going to get it, wet sand lightly 1500, 2000 up to 5000 3M then some compound. That’s probably an hours worth of work to get it to 75%. Looks like the clearcoat is pretty well shot.

Just leave it as is. I've been told cosmetic damage like this is a good way to break in your new truck and give it some character.

If this is your first new car, do not use your insurance. Your rate will probably skyrocket.

Find an independent body shop. Get their price. And then find out what the dealers approved shop if they don't own their own and get their price and make sure they know you're wanting the cash price.

Yes, that will contribute to earlier rusting if there's bare metal.

My wild guess is that the scratch you showed will end up costing about $600 or so.

I wonder if I should get a ceramic coating while I'm at it so something like this doesn't happen again? I mean it's expensive, but if it protects the paint, especially with a lifetime warranty, it could be worth the additional $1000. It should at least bring the scratch resistance in line with Gorilla Glass on a smartphone, which would have survived scraping against wood. It may also eliminate the need for a bed liner.

If you want it to look nice as if it never was damaged get a couple of estimates and get it done professionally.

I am not sure ceramic coating will protect from such an impact or friction with wood.
Paint Protection Film might be better for that, which will sacrifice itself to a degree, but even then, it has its limits.

Take it to a good autobody repair shop and get a free estimate. I have some clearcoat I need buffed (on my Mini) and it'll cost about $100 per panel...including if they need to touchup any paint that might come off in the process. I'm already planning to get our Maverick a ceramic coating when it arrives. Estimate I was given for "small pickup truck" was $599.

It's looks to me to be the plastic bumper. It won't rust. Order touchup paint from ford. Might be handy to have around anyway. Polish out what you can with something that is more than wax (rubbing compound I think they call it). What is left use the touchup paint on after wiping it with Acetone. After a week or so buff it again. If it looks like crap, and you can't stand it, then go pay the big bucks and have it professionally fixed. You will probably have more after 3-5 years if you use it like a truck.
