No APIM in XLT and below (Unable to upgrade Sync)

I may have just found a problem with the XLT and XL models if you are looking to upgrade the APIM. There isnt one in the dash. This would explain why only the Lariat has Sync 3. I took the radio module out and there is no APIM anywhere in the dash. I looked in the cavity it would normally be in and nothing. The other thing i noted was that the USB chord from the dash goes right into the radio ACM. When I plugged everything back in the screen came to life so it appears that this is where the chip shortage or cost cutting came into play and also why the performance with the whole infotainment system sucks. Anyone else with an XLT find the APIM and I just missed it?

Its basically the brain for the Sync system Ford uses. Its usually seperate from the radio module. I was taking a peek to see if the XLT could be upgraded to sync 3 but without an APIM I dont know if it will be possible. Im hoping I just didnt see if but I looked everywhere for it and didnt see it.

Accessory Protocol Interface Module. Basically what allows you to get Sync.

I was just wondering about this exact thing today. Would it not be possible to get the APIM for an Escape from the parts department or a junkyard? I would assume a lot of the guts under the dash are identical to the Escape and Bronco Sport.

you can but the biggest issue is there is no 50pin connector in the dash that would connect to the APIM. I’m going to open it up again tomorrow and look around some more. The wiringlooks very different from what I’ve seen in a Bronco and Escape along with the lariat Mav.

This diagram is from a Lariat showing where the APIM is. I circled it and you can see the large 50 pin connector running to it. That plug was nowhere to be found behind the dash.

I was looking at the Nav upgrade for the sync 3. I watched an install video for the Bronco Sport and the apim is very buried in the lower center dash.

The bronco sport comes with sync 3 standard. I looked up under the hvac vents and there was nothing up there either. I’ll get pics tomorrow

Look at the pic I posted. The part I circled is not installed in the XLT which makes sync 3 upgrades very difficult if not impossible

Looking at the as built on my XLT Lux vs a Lariat Lux I don't have any 7D0- entries in the BCE like the Lariat LUX does. If it has an APIM its getting programmed under different addresses. Another oddity the Lariat Lux actually had PCM entries where the lesser models don't.

I’m new to Forscan and don’t have my ODB connector yet. It will be here tomorrow. But just looking at it physically the hardware looks way different than the diagrams I see about the lariat

Ask this question at FLVPMods.com. They upgraded my C max to have NAV. Works great and easy to do. Also not out of this world expensive
