Good test, would still take the Ford over the Hyundai just on the fact that you can obtain the 4k towing package with a turbo charged engine at about $10k cheaper than the entry level price for the trim of the Santa Cruz that gets you the turbo engine and on top of that you’re spending even more on the Santa Cruz due to the fact that both the hitch and the trailer brake controller are options rather than standard

For comparison here is TFL's test of the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid towing a 1500 lb trailer

It's MAVERICK Time: Ford's Tiniest Truck Takes On The World's TOUGHEST Towing Test!

For the Hybrid there were only 3 brake applications. Noise was at 71 db but rose to 77 for a period. It also averaged 11 MPG going up the mountain.

They scored the Hybrid at 92 1/2 out of 100.

For the Maverick EcoBoost AWD with the 4K tow package this is what they got:

There were only 9 brake applications. Noise was at 66 db. It also averaged 6.5 MPG going up the mountain.

In either case, hybrid or turbo, the maverick seems to be punching way above its weight when it comes to towing

I always love watching these, but then I remember I will literally never end up towing anything ever 😆

I'm a little concerned with how hot the Maverick got when towing up hill. I thought the 4K tow package upgraded radiator and fan would have done a better job.

Yeah that was a little worrisome. I imagine that Ford tested the truck doing harder things than this, but that temp gauge was really rising at the end there.

+ Being outside @ elevation in the winter , like was it even 38 degrees outside ?

You can’t tow the MAX 4k with a 4k tow package with a steep incline/decline, high altitude, and pushing it to 60 the whole time without expecting some excess heat. In the owners manual it is recommended to change the transmission fluid far more frequently (30k vs 150k) if you tow on a regular basis due to excess heat.

I recommend buying a Ranger if anyone's intensions are to tow near 4k up steep grades, or at high elevations, all the time.

I couldn't find the calculations for how much steep grades decrease the towing capacity but it is out there. I don't plan to tow anything with the Maverick.

High Altitude Operation
Gasoline engines lose power by 3-4% per 1,000 ft. elevation. To maintain performance, reduce GVWs and GCWs by 2% per 1,000 ft. elevation starting at the 1,000 ft. elevation point.

This could help reduce heat

Driving With an Automatic Overdrive Transmission

With certain automatic overdrive transmissions, towing – especially in hilly areas – may cause excessive shifting between overdrive and the next lower gear. To eliminate this condition and achieve steadier performance, overdrive can be locked out

Reduce lugging up hill

Towing On Hills
Downshift the transmission to assist braking on steep downgrades and to increase power (reduce lugging) when climbing hills

It should be noted... The hybrid Ecoboost was pulling double the weight of the hybrid.

Still, I'm thrilled. I need hauling more than towing and it looks like the hybrid is going to be great for that.

I think being at elevation world harm cooling .. Less dense air moving over radiator means less air to transfer heat to.

That said... Texan here. I'm not gonna be towing up mountains anytime soon...I think most will be fine.

Right, good point. I forgot about air density @ elevation.
