Thank you for the knowledge and taking time to reply in length!

I understand it can shorten engine life. For me, this is a fun truck. I do enjoy putting miles on it and giving it the beans. When my crosstrek got hit by a deer, I paid for this Mav in full with the insurance check. My plans are to have fun with it, and when the time comes, I will build up a motor and do the 2.3 turbo swap. I do run a pre filter on the SB as well, not sure if its helping, but mostly im not worried about it as I have too many cars as it is. I guess I am self inducing a new project at this point?
I totally get it. I am not saying you or anyone shouldn't. I just don't think it is a good mod to do by itself is all. Forget about the particulate issue, the performance gains are minimal when not paired with other mods or a tune. Now adding a CAI along with an oil bypass filter is a different story assuming they work as advertised by filtering engine oil down to 5 microns or less. That should minimize or negate the particulate issue with a CAI. That filter should be able the filter the CAI excess plus more which in turn should be a real across the board performance gain because the moving parts inside the crankcase can move freer.

My concern is damage to the turbocharger. My first thought is that free flowing filter allows more stuff into the intake turbine.

Regular turbochargers can get as hot as 1000F. High performance ones as hot as 1800F. I doubt it will be an issue. If you watched the video the more salient point concerning aftermarket air filters is avoid K&N air filters like the plague.

But it looks cool..😆
Yes they do! I especially like the see-through cover. But the main reason for me to get one (when available) is the sound. Going to order the dry “extended use” filter instead of the oiled.

Again I did not mention temperature, but the filtering quality. The clearances are tight.

smart car had a see-through engine cover available from customizers.😆😆

The turbo is tough enough to suck in dirty sooty exhaust gases like a champ. I believe an air filter from a top notch manufacturer will be ok. But I understand your concern. Going to avoid an oiled filter!

I have dumped K&N since buying the 2.7. I have seen dust damaged impeller turbines also, hence my concern.

" The turbo is tough enough to suck in dirty sooty exhaust gases like a champ." Seems CAI pulls outside air, filters it, sends it to the turbine. Where does sooty exhaust gases fall in here, I'm not drafting a diesel vehicle?

Been doing some reading on how exactly a turbocharger works and you are correct that extra particulate can cause abrasion to the turbine and compressor. Even though it gets hot, apparently it doesn't get hot enough in the intake to vaporize solids which I was wrong about. It will eventually be a problem no matter what intake you run. The answer as it turns out kills 2 birds with one stone. Run a turbo cleaner. Clean it with CRC GDI IVD intake valve and turbo cleaner right before your oil change. Since the ecoboost is a GDI engine the valves will clog over time since it doesn't spray excess gas that also washes the valves. This cleaner is designed to deal with the problem. I've been using this since my truck hit around 35k miles for the GDI cleaning along with liqu moli dijectron because of the dirty valve issue with GDI engines.
