Crotchety old guy here. One issue I see for the Slate is that the folks who most could use a vehicle that starts at under $25k tend not to have access to dedicated EV charging.

If we were renting a home or apartment an EV or plug-in hybrid at any price becomes a more difficult sell.

E.g. between this and the upcoming Ford EV truck the idea of the Ford has more won over my wife who is thinking about something to replace her Golf because the Ford will certainly have more creature comforts (expect it to have a radio and power windows and expect it to have a trim level that includes heated seats), but we have the possibility to install a charger since we have our own home.

I think we won't pull the trigger in the next year anyway so we'll have to see.
Not many EV chargers in the "Projects", right? If there were, what would go first the Slate or the Charger? Asking for a friend.

Would love just crank windows but a Radio is a must!! Doesnt have to be fancy with sub woofers but to me a radio is very important and no i dont have one of those fancy phones to plug in and send songs through the screen info center, just give me a basic radio with 6 presets if possible (boomer here) :giggle:

One of my all time favorite vehicles was the Suzuki Samari. Long time-a-go but base model was around $23,000. I can see the attraction of a Slate if it had:

4x4 wheel drive, maybe AWD
EV
Radio & speakers
Rugged easy clean seats
Modular Roof top
Trailer hitch option
Electric windows (without that's just being too cheap, at $23k; they'll loose sales by penny pinching! Not having Electric Windows with an Electric Vehicle make little sense.)

As hard as my Dad and I tried, we could not get the Samari stuck in the mud.
It was so narrow it would go anywhere in the woods. Great hunting-fishing vehicle.

Just like the Honda Element, the Suzuki Samari has a following to this day.
At its base price it's too close to a Maverick XL Hybrid, with a lot of bells and options.
Aftermarket CarPlay's are so cheap to add - I even have one on my motorcycle.

(Slate should themselves or thru after marker sources make some basic devices available)

The Samari (renamed-Jimny) is still sold in high demand in many other countries.
They really need to post some spec's like: 0-60 mph

If something has value, it's going to get stolen in the rough neighborhoods.

I grew up in an economically depressed area and my parents were "upper class" for our hood (ie struggling middle class) but Dad always kept the front shades drawn and only had TVs and electronics in the back of the house or the basement.

Made sure the house didn't look too nice on the outside and always drove old beaters - him and Mom.

Went so far as burning toy boxes and electronics boxes.

My brother and I never understood why but crime happened all around us but never found our house, by luck or Dad's efforts.

This thing was already DOA at $20k, now at $34.5k its just laughable.

No radio, no AC, no features at all, or for $2k more you can get a truck with 4 seats, double the tow rating, no reliance on charging networks, a bluetooth enabled radio with apple carplay, cruise control, and wide support networks.

Hmmmm.....
You can also read about it here, and here...

But we can never have enough threads where a bunch of crotchety old guys tell us how they aren't interested in something.
The ironic hypocrisy here is so thick you could use it to deflect lasers.
If you were a single guy driving a Yugo you were staying single. Out on a date....you aint gettin lucky tonight. ☮
I have a coworker with not one but THREE yugos.

He's been married for over 20 years and has 4 children.

Uh ... pretty much everybody passed on the Yugo.
Funny thing, we had a used car dealer in my home town that stepped up and built a new showroom to start selling Yugos as an official Yugo dealership....it quickly folded.

Still selling lots of the Jimny today… and for over 56 years. I see them everywhere but Chinese EV competition is attacking this model.

In addition to that demographic think of all the younger folk who are just now making their way through this "gig economy", living in shared rented spaces, working multiple jobs, etc.. Not many non-luxury apartments have charging spots, certainly fewer would have dedicated ones.

But China will have a hard time getting EV's in to the US. Tried to import a Jimny but way to much trouble...They are all over Australia.

I disagree. If you got her to sit on the passenger side, you’re probably making enough contact to be considered “2nd base”.
