Getting gas after going below 1/4 tank is cheap, fuel pumps and evap. systems are expensive. I'm right below 1/4 tank right now and I'll be going for gas tonight. It's been down around 1/4 for a week.

They say that gasoline cools the fuel pump, so that's what I'm going with. I should have gassed up days ago really.

It's better to assume that the remaining fuel estimate is wildly optimistic.

As was noted, fuel pumps are made to be cooled by fuel.
Keeping the tank at least ¼ full is recommended to ensure the pump remains adequately cooled.

I consider a quarter tank as out of fuel, but then I don't have a lot of experience with the fun of running out of fuel, where you might...

Lot of range available on the 16.5 gal tank, after it says 0 miles to empty, which is based on 13.8 gal reading.
Yes that is correct - buy a lot of drivers that without going much past E, have found the fillups to be easily and well over 14-15 gal.

It doesn't sputter when it runs out - the system plays fail safe and stops the pump when low enough. Still fuel in tank. And the fuel pump temp to that point - no different than normal.
Yes - system knows the temp of the pump like many models do - these ain't ancient systems.

You can go right up to the point it sputters and quits. I have never understood the fascination with going as far as possible before buying fuel. Are you afraid of filling up and dying before needing to fill up? Same with topping off after the first click. Why?

On the opposite end of this spectrum, stop once the fill nozzle at the pump clicks itself off, don't try to 'maximize fuel fill' and over ride it.

I generally try to get no lower than 1/8 to 1/4 tank before filling up, the fuel pump is cooled by the gasoline it is submerged in -- some say that it doesnt really matter, but why risk it unless it's an emergency.

A) the pump is in a low deep well, or sump.

B) the liquid in the deep well is beyond the 13.8 gallons of a nominal fill

C) Ford intended for you, me, every hybrid driver to be able to use 13.8 gallons between fill-ups.

D) After you burn 13.8 gallons, 2.7 gallons remains

E) 2.7 gallons will keep your pump cool

F) so yes, your fuel gauge is lying. It's wrong.

G) when it says "empty" (an invisible, arbitrary line) it is not empty.
