Hi all I’ve been having some trouble with my Maverick clunking and shifting poorly. Turns out that it was the clutch pack in the RTU. They did a full RTU replacement on the vehicle and it seems like the problem has been solved, but they did tell me that I should keep an eye out for any other drive training issues as this failure may have worn components out.

Can anyone on here give me an idea of what kind of things I should be looking for around premature failure within the drivetrain?

At only 22k miles, I wouldd consider that an unusual failure rather than normal wear. My first thought would be a defective component or assembly issue rather than a design life problem. If the RDU (rear differential unit ) was "fuly" replaced under warranty and the vehicle is now operating normally, I'd simply monitor for vibration, clunking, abnormal noises during turns, AWD engagement issues, or fluid leaks. Personally, I wouldn't expect a properly repaired drivetrain to start failing elsewhere solely because the 1st- ORIGINAL-NEW RDU failed at 22k miles... .

As would I, I had a suspicion something was wrong so I had them do the drive unit fluids and they found pieces of the clutch pack. They actually attempted to rebuild it but broke the idler pin in the process so I got the updated RDU instead.

It was somewhat common on some of the early years. It was mostly caused by fluid that got contaminated because of a vent tube that wasn't placed in the right position from the factory. Once the clutches are replaced, it solves the problem permanently. Nothing else to worry about.

What year is your truck?

With the new RDU you'll be alright from now on

Ford replaced my RDU in my 2021 Bronco Sport at 37,000 miles, warranty. No big deal.

I would not worry about it, but would keep my ears open... I had an issue with the rear-end on my 2001 Escape (1st year of the Escape, 1st one delivered to dealer). Whenever the car decided or I decided, to turn on the AWD, it would howl even worse than you would expect on a rear wheel drive would after lots and lots of miles. I noticed it one day (had only a few months) when I was driving to work in driving rain when the system decided to send power to the rear. Tech that went with me on the test drive was actually startled by the noise when he engaged AWD (you could do that manually back then). Replace under warranty, never had another issue with the Escape (3.0 V6).

Quick question - just wondering if you've ever had what I refer to as the 13 mph thunk, clunk or thud when slowing down? The issue happens on some AWD Mavericks (both hybrid and EB) as the AWD system engages around that 13 mph mark when slowing down. I know of a few owners who had their RDU replaced under warranty because of the 13 mph thunk but the issue came back after some time on the 'new' RDU. Here are a few threads on the issue in case your interested:

https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...the-rear-at-around-13-mph-when-braking.72905/

https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...down-braking-at-around-the-13-mph-mark.72957/

https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/f...ms-to-have-disappeared-on-awd-maverick.76483/

Also @Darryl who have encountered any AWD Mav's with this 13 mph thunk noise in the service department at your dealership? From a poll I created here on MTC it seems as though 27% of respondents report having the issue.

My truck XLT AWD, 4K tow. I tried to avoid it when I was looking but no choice. Really wanted FWD only. Noe learning Ford gonna do new XLT FWD. And a plus is better injection system than what I have now, the DI stuff. However I own the truck now, not the bank. So prob keep it. Not driven much. Almost 3 yrs ownership, only 92,xx miles so far.

@CajunMick do you have the 13 mph thunk noise when slowing down on your AWD Maverick that I mentioned in the post right above yours?

@Darryl,
What if the repair tech didn't notice or correct the vent tube placement?
