If I remove the rubber piece above the phone charger will it increase my charging capability?

Google says if a phone case is thicker than 3mm it can slow charging, and over 5mm dramatically slows charging, so take a measurement of the mat and if it is less than 3mm you probably wont see a difference. You could try it both ways and see if the charge time speeds up without it.

🤔 How many layers of "plastic" are really between the actual charger and your phone?
1. The plastic surrounding the charging element
2. The plastic of the console.
3. The plastic of the console liner.
4. You have the plastic of the phone cover.
5. And finally you have the thin plastic phone case itself. 😲
I think that's a lot to ask of the admittedly cheap wireless charger Ford installed.

Induction technology facts.
👍 Good for cooking 🍳my eggs.

👎Not for charging or cooking my 🤳 phone.

I happen to have done some research into the WACM:
https://wiki.blueovallabs.com/wiki/Wireless_Accessory_Charging_Module

From the holes in the pad, I'm assuming that's the WCFDM00N2A1 variant with a fan, which is relatively new.
You should be able to get 15W charging from it, assuming it is not thermally throttled.

By the way, Ford appears to have heavily over-engineered these things.

They're attached to the CAN bus because they will automatically adjust the coil frequency to avoid the currently selected AM radio station, as well as temporarily cut power whenever the BCM needs to scan for a key fob within the vehicle...

They'll also reduce the speed of their tiny cooling fan if you have the HVAC blower off and the windows closed, to make sure that it is inaudible... (this was reverse engineered from the firmware)

The problem is using wireless Android Auto / Apple CarPlay / GPS Mapping with wireless charging in progress. Every phone and every quality wireless charger has the same problem... overheating. The AA/CP/GPS and induction charging combos are no bueno.

If you're charging an idle phone there isn't usually a problem. But if it's being actively used it just forces the phone to thermal throttle.

I've been in an Audi A3 for the past month with wireless AA and wireless charging and the same thermal throttle happens when I tested. I use an ultra-thin case as well, though I've tried caseless and the phone will still overheat. I picked up an aftermarket wireless charger and same problem.

It'd be a great tech if you could actually use the device while it's charging. 🤷‍♂️

It is slow, but if you are driving why would you care? It doesn't get that hot. The hottest phone I ever had was in my pocket while it was searching for a cell tower. I charge my phone every night and haven't drained one since the 90s, so the charger in my truck is like gravy on a biscuit, nice but not necessary.

My pelican kevlar phone case causes my iPhone 16 pro to get hot when I try to surface charge . I took my IPhone out of its case and charged it a little, raised the battery 10% to a 70% charge level,
Phone got hot.

Heat when charging kills your phone battery.
Fords surface charger is useless in my NOT so humble opinion.
That charge pad is a junk catcher, nothing more.

I agree. Hot phone and slow charging. And now that the Qi2 magnetic standard is out, it’d be a nice option to have. Hopefully someone more skilled at fabrication could make a replacement.

If Mabett or one of our other good vendors make a fix like you speak of I’d bite.

Most likely the only way to find out.

I’ve said that to Ryan directly. He said he would bring it to their team. Hopefully something comes of it because I’d buy a mag charger replacement for sure.

But if it's being actively used it just forces the phone to thermal throttle.
I've found that the pad basically holds the charge steady when using both map/waze and music/pandora.

But if the sun hit's it directly through an open window or sunroof, the iPhone goes to thermal overload and tells me to come back later.
