These feel like overkill to protect the back of the seat from my son’s shoes but I want them!

If you are a contractor and have a need for this extra storage space I think they are a great idea and they look to be of good quality and well designed. But you might as well go ahead and remove the back seat entirely and utilize all of that space because no one will be able to sit back there with these racks installed.

I like these, but I’m worried in the event of a crash they may be extremely dangerous to anyone in the backseat.
Anyone have insight into that?
I agree 100%. You never know how metal and bodies will move in an accident. I would not want my kids, or today, my grandkids in the back with that in front of them in a serious crash..

Yeah, my back seat is my trunk, I don’t put bodies in my trunk unless they are dead . :’P

take out the back seat and put more panels where the seat back used to be and get a TON more storage.

I would not want that in the cab regardless, especially with those tools attached to it. Vehicles don't have a whole lot of exposed metal inside the passenger area anymore for safety reasons. Mostly been replaced with plastic or soft-touch surfaces, which as can be imagined, hurt a lot less to be struck by in a collision.

The last things I want flying around the cab in a collision are a claw hammer, an axe, and a large wrench. I prefer pickups over vans or SUVs partly so tools and such can be separate from the passenger compartment.

Not to mention that the headrests are a passive restraint system. Airbags protect you in frontal collisions. Headrests protect you in rear-end collisions, so it's important that they are adjusted at the height that they can do that as intended.

That is exactly what I plan on doing. No one will ever sit back there AND I need the extra interior storage

It is the way of the doodads.

‘ A "doodad" is an informal term for a small gadget, device, or object whose name you cannot remember, do not know, or cannot recall at the moment. Similar to "thingamajig" or "doohickey," it often refers to mechanical parts, electronic accessories, or decorative trinkets.’

People love to add doodads to their vehicles.
They’ll sell a shit ton of those.
