Consumer Reports has just released their predicted reliability study results for small and midsize pickup trucks for 22 MY. The publication provides a five-tier predicted reliability scoring system, with 1 out of 5 indicating poor reliability and 5 out 5 indicating excellent reliability.
  • 2022 Honda Ridgeline: 4/5
  • 2022 Ford Ranger: 4/5
  • 2022 Toyota Tacoma 3/5
  • 2022 Ford Maverick: 3/5
  • 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz: 2/5
  • 2022 Chevy Colorado: 2/5
  • 2022 GMC Canyon: 2/5
  • 2022 Jeep Gladiator: 2/5
  • 2022 Nissan Frontier: 2/5
Although traditionally they have rated Hyundai products higher predicted reliability than Ford, they predict that the Santa Cruz will have lower average reliability than the Maverick. Interestingly, they also predict the Maverick will be more reliable than the F-150 and F-150 Lightning.

Anything new seems to take a heavy beating in their score system, so no surprise. What's strange are trucks like the Tacoma, which used to have better scores, yet nothing about it mechanically has changed in years.

The Ram 1500 Classic has been in production since 2009, with a refresh in 2013, and it received a 1/5 predicted reliability score! Ouch!

Interestingly, they rate the new generation higher, so I wonder what they know that we don't. We do know that Toyota just announced that they are officially reducing their quality standards, and 75% of parts that were considered too damaged to use and were rejected will now be installed on their vehicles anyway due to parts shortages and high consumer demand.

CR used to break down their detailed reliability data (the charts with the different colors for specific areas) more thoroughly, by engine type and transmission. I wish they still did that so we could tell any difference in reliability between hybrid and regular drive trains.

For instance they currently list the Escape as 1/5 overall but don’t break down the hybrid vs ICE in the chart.

They do, but we won't see that until April of 2022, and that will be for 2021 MY vehicles, as its always a year behind since it measures actual reliability, instead of merely predictions.

Not really. I suspect CR looks at a manufactures track recorder for vehicles with similar price points, quality of material used in construction and such. All of those things can give you a good idea of how reliable a vehicle will be long term. Sure it's a guess, but it's about as useful as any other initial quality evaluation.

"Predictive" reliability sounds pretty stupid.

Not really that alien of a concept, its kind of like looking at someone's credit score before you give them a loan. No one can predict the future, but if you gather enough data and crunch the numbers, you can make an educated guess about risk based on the recent behavior and assign a score accordingly. If you crunch those numbers and it gives someone a score of 500, it doesn't mean they won't pay you back for sure, but the risk is higher than say crunching the numbers for someone that hits 800. CRs team basically tries to gather as much info as they can about the plant, what parts it shares with other vehicles, past survey data for the brand, any insider info they can gleam, etc. and make an educated guess. But yeah, its a guess.

Interesting that the Ranger scores high. I was reading the Ranger was one of only 3 trucks they officially recommend too? I think the F-150 and Ridgeline were the other two. Albeit they were quite lukewarm, it was only a technical recommendation because it scored over 60.

Not sure how much confidence I have in CR though. Who knows what they base anything on. I get the impression of a bunch of tree huggers lol.

As long as it's higher than the Hyundai I'm happy.

I'm still driving my '98 jeep wrangler (until my Maverick comes in). CR always gives the wrangler a very low rating, but it always gets one of the highest ratings for resale value.
