Last week I was driving home from St George (Utah) and I saw " AWD OFF" on my display.
What does this mean?
The Maverick is a permanent AWD no?
So what does " AWD OFF" mean?
Thank you

To clear up the first bit of confusion: the Ford Maverick actually uses an Intelligent AWD system, rather than a "permanent" or "full-time" 4WD system. While it's always ready to engage, it primarily runs in Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) to save fuel and only sends power to the rear wheels when the sensors detect a need for it.

If you were driving through hilly terrain or in high ambient temperatures (common around St. George), the AWD coupling can get too hot. To protect the mechanical components from damage, the computer temporarily shuts off power to the rear wheels.

The road condition was near perfect, about 50F , no other message.
Not a big deal just wondering.

That's interesting, I've had my 25 HAWD since last October and I have never seen that message displayed.

The "AWD OFF" message on a Ford Maverick means the All-Wheel Drive system has temporarily disabled itself, reverting the truck to front-wheel drive, to protect components from overheating during heavy use, such as intense snow, mud, or sand. It also activates if a compact spare tire is installed.
Common Reasons for "AWD OFF":
  • System Overheating: Sustained, aggressive driving in low-traction conditions (e.g., deep sand or snow) can cause the AWD coupling to overheat.
  • Compact Spare Tire: The system detects a size mismatch and disables AWD to prevent drivetrain damage.
  • Wheel Spin/Slip: Excessive wheel spin can trigger a temporary shutdown.
  • Fault Code: A sensor, electrical, or, less commonly, a mechanical failure.
What to Do:
  • Cool Down: Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and let the vehicle cool down for 10-15 minutes. Restarting often clears the message.
  • Check Spare: If using a compact spare tire, replace it with a full-size tire.
  • Normal Driving: If the issue was caused by heavy wheel spin, the system should reset on its own after normal driving for a short distance.
  • Service Requirement: If the message persists, it may indicate a deeper fault (e.g., a bad wheel speed sensor or fluid issue) requiring professional inspection.
The vehicle remains safe to drive in front-wheel drive mode while this message is active.

Thank you for the information but I was in none of these conditions.
Do I have a sensor malfunctioning? May be.
Since that happened only once without consequences, I am not going to worry about

This is from the 2025 owners manual. Any chance you had a spare on? Maybe a wheel sensor going bad, making the system think you have the spare on?

Thank you all for your replies but I had nothing exceptional on my vehicle or driving. Just a fluke.
