Saw one of these on the highway today. Maybe a tad bigger then the Mav....smaller than the Ranger. First time seeing one of these. Volkswagen Amarok

I didn't know that VW had decided to bring these to North America, interesting.
This Amorok is one of the first fruits of the big Ford/VW partnership deal fprged a couple of years ago.
Under the skin, the Amorok is a Ford Ranger.

You beat me to it, I was just going to say that underneath the Amorok is a Ranger. Seeing the OP is from Texas I'm going to guess the Amorok came from Mexico. I doubt Ford would let them sell it here.

Yep, it had Mexico plates on it. Just kinda caught me by surprise having the Volkswagen symbol on it.

Is this like the old Mazda/Ranger marriage that made absolutely no sense at all ?

Or the Toyota Corolla/Geo fiasco ?

That VW looks very inefficient in so many ways.
Interior space,
bed height/size,
Has to be less fuel efficient than the Maverick with that tall tippy looking profile.

Yep, looks like a Sport Track copy.

One if the things I like best about my Maverick is it Does NOT look like everything else or a re-awakened old design that failed.

My brother owned both at the same time. They were so similar he had no preference.

His Ranger was that same color.

I miss the aluminum wheels of that era.
IMHO those looked way better than any of today’s Maverick wheels.
Nice fat comfy tires, not these low profile on big wheels rigs of today.

Just returned from Christmas in the UK and saw loads of Rangers and Amaroks on the roads. Very popular there even though on the larger size for Europe where you would think the Maverick could be popular.

Amarok is too big (Ranger) and Saveiro is too small. I see many of these VWs where I live. The Amarok (spelling) is nice but $$$$. The Ranger is also the size that the Chinese pickups are targeting (like the Hunter). Maverick still stands alone (with little comparison to the Hyundai).

Ford owned a big stake in Mazda at the time, so for them it made perfect sense. Some people wouldn’t drive a Ford if you paid them, so slapping a Mazda badge on it opened it up to new customers, and in some cases different markets.

I doubt the Maverick will ever be a hit in Europe. I doubt they’d buy a vehicle that totals out during such low speed impacts.

Ford knows how to make trucks. VW does not. VW sells well in Europe. Ford does not.

Simply a marriage of convenience for both. Ford makes the truck and VW slaps their badge on it. Both make money on the deal.

This
Ford Maverick Volkswagen Amarok 1767374244756-6j

Was a Nissan failure with Mercedes.
The Ranger is well-received outside the USA and the VW version is designed more for luxury. Since American vehicles have recently become very difficult to acquire in many countries, the VW would have been my purchase if I couldn’t get my MY24 on the boat in time. Two years later and still attracts plenty of attention.
