why i did not get to buy my 2025 lariat today in morgan hill calif

so i ordered my2025 lariat in early september 25. after the folks sent me a 2026 vin, i called the ford store last week and , miraculously they were receiving exactly what i ordered, and it was in richmond, ca,waiting to be delivered.
so i drove the hour drive to morgan hill, they knew i was paying cash, check, and deal would not be done til check cleared. i wasn’t bringing the ruby red beauty home until the bed cover was installed anyway. they were going to deliver when done.
ready to write check, they have my drivers license, been emailing and phone calls all week, and they ask for more proof of who i am, some sort of computer check that i have to agree to. i said no. they asked again and sad this was mandatory. i said show me the law. no law, just store policy the inventory manager says. i said no got up to go and manager says wait, he walks away and comes back,says “sorry if you want the maverick you must say yes.”. i say no and walk out without my ruby red 25 hybrid lariat.
why in the world couldn’t i buy my maverick? why would they do this?
they could have googled me, my name comes up. ulterior motive by this ford store?

You were writing the check at that moment. How did you expect them to clear your check? They were using a third-party service to "guarantee" your check which includes identity verification. Am I missing something?

That whole process should take no more than an hour.
But I’m with the Op, If a dealer starts jerking me off I walk.

But if I’m financing I get a power of attorney
From my bank so I can drive the car away right then.
Then talk to the bank even if I’m paying for the truck in full.

When I negotiate a price I’m done with the dealer. When they ask how I will pay I hand them that POT and tell them nothing else.

Again if they start screwing around I walk.

I did all my PPW then went to my credit union the next day and obtained the check and related documents to add credit union as lien holder on truck...handed them the check and documents and while we were going over the features of the vehicle they were given the "all clear" signal from the finance guy and away I went with my new Maverick...no fuss, no muss....of course, I am only 15 minutes away from the dealership so, there is that too. I don't believe the dealership was trying to scam you more like they have had this happen to them before and were unwilling to let it happen again if they were not careful.

What I don't understand is that you ordered the truck through them, you would have thought they would've figured out "who you are" in the interim of while the truck is being built so that delivery day went as smooth as possible. Something is being left out of the information packet.

OP, welcome to MTC. Hopefully you won't be a one & done poster.

Admittedly, most dealers aren't fans of all-cash sales, since they usually receive a kickback from the finance company. But, all of my all-cash (check) purchases have gone smoothly. Not sure what they were asking you to sign, nor why a verification of your identity would be a problem? Looking at their online reviews, there seems to be a common thread of problems with non-English speakers, does that apply in your case?

Hopefully, you can find another Maverick at a different dealer, and enjoy the ride.

It appears he was giving them a "personal" check, not a "bank" check. First time I've heard check verification described as "screwing around".

He was buying it with a personal check. He was NOT picking up the truck. He was leaving it to get the tonneau cover to be installed. They were going to deliver the truck. They had time for the personal check to clear. They had plenty of time for check verification. It appears, they WERE screwing around

Sorry that you had what must have been a disappointing and frustrating day.

Two questions. What other proof of ID did the dealer demand? Why try to pass a personal check on a $40,000 purchase, when you can get a cashier’s check for a $5 fee?

Clearing a check is as simple as running it through the system it takes 2 - 3 seconds tops. People do it everyday, Walmart, Kroegers, in face they give the check back with the processing information on the back. I wrote one at the state tag office (because it's $15 for cards) walked out with check, so if a state office can handle it EVERYBODY should be able to handle it. Dealer was just F***ing with you.
