FWIW

Myself, my wife, and a friend who regularly rides with me, we all feel the seats on my Maverick are more comfortable than the seats on my previous 2023 Silverado. It was an LTZ with the leather seat package.

The Maverick seats have softer padding. However, I do miss the vented seats on the Silverado.

do you think Ford does this intentionally? Do they make base level seats uncomfortable?
Ford, and every other manufacturer, offers different trim levels to choose from so you don't have to spend more money than you choose to.

I don't think they make seats in lower trims "intentionally uncomfortable" because that's going limit repeat business.

If they offered lumbar support in the base trim, there would be complaints about affordability cries of "its a truck"

The problem here isn't conspiracy at the manufacturer level, it's a general lack of understanding of what your buying at the consumer level.

The seats in our 2023 Lariat are very comfortable. Would not change anything about them as far as shape and support. 600 miles over two days and no pain or discomfort on the driver or passenger side (my wife and I switch often). Only thing that we wish the Lariat came with, and should, as the luxury version of the Maverick, is ventilated/air-conditioned front seats. Our former Cadillac DTS had them and they were great in the Mojave Desert area we live in. Would gladly pay more for that feature, but the seats themselves are fine.

I have inflatable lumbar support in my Maverick. I don't use it. For me I find it uncomfortable when inflated.
The thickness of the padding, in the Maverick seats is another matter.
It is too thin 🤏 especially the bottom. It doesn't matter whether it's the XL, XLT or Lariat.
Across Ford Maverick trims, the foam cushioning underneath the seat upholstery is the same, so there is no significant difference in thickness. The main differences between the seats on the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims are the upholstery material and available features.
I have a 25 XL nothing xtra except hitch. I have done 4 700 mile trips and I was very comfortable no back or leg pain.

Today I was heading into the shoe store to get new shoes, and a guy with a Ford Explorer pulled up. I had asked him if it was a 2025 one because it looked new and he said it wasn't - that it was a 2021. I asked him how'd he like it and he said he hated it because the seats are uncomfortable as the base trim (which he had) had no lumbar support. He was fit, so it couldn't be this whole "you're fat" claim many love to throw around.

My question for you all...do you think Ford does this intentionally? Do they make base level seats uncomfortable?
When I first test drove a 2022 Maverick, one of the 1st. Things I noticed was how comfortable the seat was. I have the 2022 Ecoboost XLT AWD with towing package.

All car manufactures have vehicles for low cost buyers, and also a line of vehicles for you to move up to. Ford to Lincoln, Chevrolet to Cadillac, Toyota to Lexus, and my wife has an Acura. Lincoln tried a truck, but no one wanted a comfortable F-150 for show, so they dropped it.

Someone going to an actual shoe store reminded me of going to Tom McCann's as a kid for my back to school shoes. (You must be over 60 to know what I'm talking about.)
Do you remember the xray thing they had (looked like a scale you got weighted on) and you saw your toes in the shoes. How about the Flagg Flier shoes with the flap tongue thing on the outside instead of laces.

I came out of a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, seats were ok but I was always readjusting myself on long road trips. I've had experience in the past with older Fusion and Focus seats, hated them! I always felt like the bottom cushions were too hard and put me up in the roof. I'm only 5'10" and it seemed I would be crooked to be comfortable in those cars. My girlfriend currently has a '13 Escape SE and her seats are ok as well. Not as bad as the sedans. However both her and myself love the Maverick seats! We are going on a road trip in November to Tennessee and we are excited to pack up the Mav and hit the road 😁 I was surprised that the arm rests on the doors have some cushion as well. I have always had hard arm rests 🤷‍♂️

I am big and fat (240#) and have had multiple back issues and surgeries, I find my XL seats perfect. I have had a hard time in many other vehicles finding a comfortable seating position that did not aggravate my back issues. This has never been the case in either of the 2 XL Mavericks that I have had. I can tell when the wife moves the seat forward but that is easily fixed. I am sure it is just a personal opinion or expectation of what the seats should be. For me, no complaints at all with the XL seats.

I read somewhere on the Internet (so it must be true) that Ford has an entire division for what the OP describes. They do psychological tests on all new employees. Those with sadistic tendencies are assigned to base trims. I think they maintain a chart titled "Customer Pain Index", and throw huge office parties when they see a certain volume of complaints on the Maverick Truck Club.

This division gets special projects now and then. The rotary shifter was one. The 2025 grille and removing physical buttons was another. For these, I wager they got cake at the monthly results party.

But of all projects, I think the pain division is most proud of the 2022 sqeaky windshield. Because it was deniable but induced ongoing customer annoyance for years.

I heard that this division, by the way, receives under-the-counter kickbacks from dealer service departments based on recall count.

Again, I read all this on the Internet So it is demonstrably true. AI told me so.

Like many have already said "some people like 'em some don't". My wife and I both think the seats in our Lariat are comfy. But she has a problem with every mattress (4) that we have purchased. I have like each one! So go figure? Life is mysterious sometimes. ✌
