So I've been thrilled with my new 2025 Maverick Hybrid. It is comfortable for me and I've been able to do everything I've wanted to do. The fuel economy is like nothing I've ever seen. I fear my joy could be short-lived. I recieved a postcard today from Delaware DMV indicating that my hybrid will be subject to an alternative Fuels Tax. Has anyone else been subjected to this tax?

Fairly sure many other states do the same or plan to from what I've read. Their all trying to get as much $ as they can for road use/maintenance since the popularity of the EV & hybrid vehicles they say they are are lacking funds since the tax model they use comes from the taxes on gasoline. I wouldn't worry, don't imagine it will be very expensive. I would predict you will still be better off from the normal gas expenses.

I have seen the whole tax table but what applies to me and my Maverickis anywhere from 60$ to 200$ per year

Oregon charges me $10 more for a 2 year registration because my maverick falls into the 20-39 mpg range. 0-19 mpg is the cheapest at $126, then $136 for 20-39, 40+ mpg is $156. EV's are $316. I do get a break on my propane transit. I pay a flat $150 per year for the fuel tax. Instead of 40 cents per gallon. So when I buy the propane there is no tax per gallon because I paid the flat yearly fee. But since I don't put lots of miles on it per year I only come out barely ahead. ✌

Here in South Carolina we pay registration Fees every two years; the hybrid is $60 more per registration period.

I think it is $80 here in Mississippi for hybrids. The only good thing I can say about our highways is at least I don't live in Louisiana!

Read the fine print on the upcomping hybrid tax in Delaware.
In Missouri, it only applys to "Plug-In Hybrids", so I just registered last month and never got dinged for not paying gas pump tax.

Ohio imposes an additional $100 annual registration fee on hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrids face a $150 fee, and fully electric vehicles are charged $200. The Ohio House of Representatives has proposed eliminating the $100 fee for non-plug-in hybrids, arguing it unfairly burdens owners who still pay gas taxes.

KS current annual fee on the registration is, so only $20 extra:

Ford Maverick Alternative fuel Tax [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS] 1757096089222-dh

For my roughly normal 10k annual mileage (11273 actual last 12 months) and 301 gal used in past year.
0.002 cents per mile extra.
Or 0.07 cents per gal extra.

Avg for 1 yr is 37.5 MPG. (pump records)
Avg for 1 yr is $2.84 / gal. (pump records)
So really $2.91 / gal with extra $20 fee in there.

If I'd driven prior RAV4 with abouts 23 mpg for this past year.
490 gal @ 2.84 = $1391.97 total.

As it was 301 gal @ 2.91 = 875.91.

Saved $516 anyway.

States appear resistant to accept that vehicles get better mileage than 30 years ago.

My Mav hybrid averages 35mpg
My wife’s ICE Honda CRV gets a little better than my hybrid. She averages about 36 mpg

But in some states I would still be taxed at a higher rate. Not fair IMO

Or as some want. A periodic fee for miles driven depending on vehicle weight and/or number of tires. Perhaps someone needs to come up with tax plan to cover those who do not own a vehicle but ride along.
