Is your skid plate/cover the same as my MY2025? Mine came off easy - maybe better screws & fasteners…?

Note the tow hooks in his pics. He has an FX4, and they have a steel skid plate, not an aero splash shield. I have an FX4 as well, and trust me, you can rely on it for protection. The skid plate is heavy and has fewer attachment points, but bolts to the subframe. It's not torx screwed into plastic nuts or clips like the shield.
Yes I have the FX4 deal.... and that cover qualfies as a skid plate. Feels like about 14 ga steel... I'll have to find my steel gauge that I use to measure steel thickness.

Speaking of that skid plate...

I asked my wife to come out to my shop and give me a hand with this oil change. She is the least automotive minded person on earth but she knows one thing... she hates the design of that skid plate... I never heard her cuss as much as she did today when we replaced that deal.... fricken engineers this and stupid dedigners that.

Kinda funny!!!

I use one of our trash cans to set the plate on then I lower the truck to meet the plate and screw it on.

1. not a skid plate.

2. Air duct is to cool the PTU not the turbo. The turbo is water cooled.

3.welcome to the club.
1) I said plate/cover to be all inclusive.

2) PTU’s don’t need cooling. Any heat the PTU in the Maverick feels is the 1000 degree turbo sitting up above it. The turbo is air & water cooled. Still gets pizza oven hot. PTU maybe gets hot enough to warm your biscuits.

3) Thanks! Fun club

Are you using a Baldwin B2 @Jalopy Technology? I've been thinking of switching to the same filter or some other FL-1 equivalent since I have to keep them in stock, but Im not fond of the low 8 PSI bypass valve pressure.
Well normally I use a Baldwin B2 filter... I bought a case of 12 and only used one BUT somebody moved that damn box and those filters are MIA! Had to go buy a filter from my friendly parts house. $4.90 vs O'Reillys $11+ price tag!

I like the larger filter capacity. I just bought a filter cutter so I will cut up the old one and see if there are any pieces of piston or connecting rods in that old filter!

I have until March to find those filters... I usually change the oil after I get back from my yearly Florida trip.

I don't have much trouble by myself with the skid plate. I use ramps with a creeper. I lift it back behind my head and set it on the ground. Be sure to use the rear bolt slots to your advantage. Just loosen the two bolts in the rear and don't remove them. They will hold the rear up while you remove the front bolts. Once the fronts are out, you can just slide it forward a couple of inches off the rear slots.

2. The Tremor has a water cooled PTU and no scoop in it's skid plate but you are entitled to your opinion.

Well she has been with me thru a lot... promoting auto racing, running hot rod shows, auto parts swap meets.

She always points the flash light in the wrong direction... she turns wrenches to the wrong clockwise direction... somehow push becomes pull when she helps me get an immobile project car into the shop.

But she recovers nicely and is a lot of help!

Unfortunately I don't have a good local source for Baldwin, but I've found sources online where I can get them for about $8 each shipped if I buy 6 or more at a time. I'm good with the Wix 1515 though since they're still one of the USA-made Wix.

Why on this forum do some say the Turbo is also oil cooled🤔?
Because oil cools and it has oil flowing through the bearings. Likewise, the engine is oil cooled too, but that should go without saying. Saying it is a leftover concept from yesteryear before water cooled turbos and the only cooling for the turbo was from the oil supply.

So, then it’s water AND oil cooled? 🫩 The engine is also oil and antifreeze (water) cooled.

I paid about $4.35 each for the case of 12 on Amazon.

Yes, even though engines are never said to be oil cooled, they are. Oil transfers combustion chamber/piston heat to the block, etc. Lubricating and cooling are two of the functions of oil.

Functions of oil in an engine:
  • Lubricate
  • Cool
  • Clean
  • Seal
  • Transfer power (as a hydraulic fluid)
Technically though, "cooling" is just another way of describing the exchange of heat energy.

Good point. Although a smooth skid plate is better than than one with holes.

But hopefully we can both agree that the air rising up through the plastic cover scoop cools both the hot PTU and the red hot Turbo:)
