Be cautious if you pull into a camp ground or anywhere with gravel and a grade.
If you loose traction and stop on a grade, even a slight one on gravel you may not be able to back down. Front end goes light and no rear wheel power. Be careful !

Thanks for the tip. The camground we're going to first has a level site and is a pull-through site also.

We pull an Aliner weighing 1550 from Phoenix to Cottonwood and my Lariat hybrid handles it very well. I think you will be fine, just watch your speed.
For sure. mostly sticking to 60mph maybe 65 tops. Less where hills are involved as necessary to try and stay below 50% power as much as I can. On long, flat runs I switch out of tow-haul mode and flip on cruise for a minute or two to give the generator a breather and to stretch and exercise my right leg a bit too.

I have the opposite concern!

I am about to purchase a Catalina Summit 154RBX (3,000lbs dry). I know the Maverick can get it UP to my mountain property but I am quite certain the Maverick can't bring it back down a 12% graade on gravel and sharp switchbacks.

My "hold my beer" buddy and I agree attempting to do it will result me in totaling the Maverick and the camper.

Hum, 12% grade sounds like a risky road design, plus gravel and switchbacks and 3K pushing ya, anyways, ya may wanta go ahead and call the first responders Before your decent down  . Have fun and be careful out there! That Catalina is a really nice trailer!!

Us crazy folks who want to live on top of mountains!!

It’s unlikely I’ll ever try to do it with the Maverick, but I’ll be seeing how good trailer brakes are and how decent I can control it with the brake controller

If it has trailer brakes ? You’d be ok right ?
12% is steep.
Your AWD so no worries there.

Crazy idea. Throw 500 pounds in the bed and back it all the way down. Switchbacks eh!
Expert backing skills and all it’s still weighs close to the Mav’s weight.

Creeping speeds like one mph.

Something to ponder.

I tow for hours on end with cruise on.
It's fine to in flat and very gentle areas.
I turn it off so I can limit the high revs on hills by letting a little speed bleed off.

With my brake controller the Maverick doesn't really feel the trailer back there.
Are you able to adjust and perfect the gain?

At a slow (10 mph) speed you should be able to lock up the trailer wheels with high gain. Then back it down a notch and try again. Keep going until the wheels brake heavily but do not lock up.

This gain value will be different on gravel vs. pavement.

The gain value will be different loaded vs. unloaded.

The gain value will be different from trailer to trailer.

I really think it will be fine by wide margin. But start slow if you're not confident.

Thakks but it really won’t be fine and not by a wide margin.

If you aren’t from the mountains you don’t understand the ass puckering moments these “roads” produce.

^Funny story.

I've towed the steepest grades North America has to offer.

Spent half my life in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah.
Driven through all 50 states.
Two-Thirds of Canada.
One-Tenth of Mexico.
So like the song, I've been everywhere, man!

I gained years of experience in various vehicles before the Maverick came along. But I've towed more than most have with my Maverick.

It's my daily driver so appreciate the MPG. But I take long vacations with my toy hauler behind my Maverick to some of the most remote spots imaginable. Well, no trailblazing. 95% pavement and 5% dirt road.

You have to know your equipment, and your skill level. Take it easy. Don't get over confident.
